    Taken - Desiree Broussard

    Chapter 1

WELCOME TO OUR COMPETITION, a large man announced in a grand voice. He wore a red robe and a black pair of pants, but his chest was bare. His dark hair was long, as was his beard. Although rugged, he was surprisingly groomed. His black eyes were accentuated with a matching kohl eyeliner, his ears pierced with medium-sized golden hoops. Four men surrounded him, two on each side. The crowd quieted immediately. Briony gathered he was someone important, but she wasn't impressed.

As you all know, integrating humanoids into our world is nothing new. We did it hundreds of years ago with very positive results. But, despite the prolific breeding of our Viking half-breeds, Scorched faces a new problem. The males of our great world far outnumber our available females, and that, my friends, simply won't do. He smiled when the crowd roared in agreement, but it didn't touch his dark eyes. They remained cold. Evil.

Briony immediately despised him. Her mind was racing at his revelations, her suspicions confirmed. The people of the village were Vikings, or at least Viking descendants. But by his accounts, he'd taken them hundreds of years before. The realization that their technology was that advanced, even back then, stunned her.

At our last count, the population of our entire planet was less than fifty thousand, he continued, his dark eyebrows pulling together as he frowned. We're growing, but not nearly enough. However, I fully believe that these ten women are the start to the end of our problems. This is only the beginning, my friends. The humanoid planet is weak, the people broken. There are plenty of women just waiting to be harvested. Our future lies within their fertile bodies, and we will not be denied!

Several guards stepped up to the women before shoving them in the other man's direction. They fought and kicked, but it didn't prevent the guards from herding them where they wanted them. When they were done, the men formed a loose circle around them, preventing them from leaving.

Their leader moved from woman to woman, examining them from head to toe. It would seem that we were delivered some of the finest specimens humanity has to offer, he drawled, his fingers lingering on Abony's face, as she glared at him, her eyes spitting fire. He continued until reaching Briony. Such fire. Such variety, he added, his hand moving out in a sweeping motion. He leaned forward, his breath revolting her as he whispered, It's a pity that there isn't time for me to sample such exotic delights.

Briony pulled away in disgust. There was something malevolent and inhumane in his dark eyes, something horrifying. To her relief, he didn't linger. Instead, he returned his attention to the crowd. In a few minutes, these lovelies will be released. They'll have ten minutes to flee... before thirty of our finest werewolves are released.

His head turned to watch something far off. Reeling from his revelations, Briony automatically looked... then wished she hadn't. Deep in the valley, was a huge, rectangular-shaped cage made of steel. It was surrounded by guards, but it didn't conceal the beings inside. They were fighting and snarling within the confines of the cage, all of them eager to be freed. The darkness of the night pressed in on her as she gaped at them. How could I have been so blind? God help us. The dogs weren't dogs at all. They were supernatural creatures, and the concubines were promised to them.

You bastard, Briony yelled, heedless of the consequences. She attempted to run at him, but the guards shoved her back. We're not interested in your competition, and we don't want to be a part of it.

Of course you don't, he grinned, enjoying her discomfort, and that just makes it all the more interesting, don't you agree?

He gestured toward the guards to release them. The men backed away as the crowd roared in delight. Your ten minutes starts... now. Run and escape... if you think you can.

Briony stared at the other women, her body filled with shock and hopelessness. Even if they did run, what was the point? Running would only incite the vicious animals that waited to pursue them, but how could they stand there and do nothing?

His offer of escape was cruel, the circumstances of their captivity wicked. The other women hesitated, too, their own doubts and fears reflected clearly on their faces. It enraged the leader who watched them so coyly, his smugness quickly turning to anger. I said run! he snarled, as he marched up to Kelly and shoved her. She fell into the grass with a scream. Run, or I'll throw each and every one of you into the pen with our men, and I'll let them all have a go at your nubile bodies.

Briony's lips tightened into an uncompromising line, as her teeth ground together. Pain shot through her jaw and into her head, but it was the only
