    SCENE 1

Patsi clutched her books to her chest as she descended down the main isle in the lecture theatre. She slid into her seat beside Megan and set the books down on the small desk with a thunk. I can’t wait for this semester to be over. No more Math for me. Ever! No matter what my brother says.

Megan leaned closer, apparently unmoved by Patsi’s heartfelt declaration. Guess who I heard from last night?

    Who? Patsi straightened her books.

    Emmanuel.

Patsi stopped what she was doing and furrowed her brow. Who?

Megan rolled her eyes. Don’t you remember? Hunky foreign guy from that party?

Patsi’s eyebrows rose. Oh, that Emmanuel! It’s been a while, don’t you think? And how did he get your number?

I gave it to him, of course. Megan flipped her perfectly styled hair off her shoulder.

    And? Patsi prodded.

Megan’s earrings dangled in time to her excitement. We talked for like, an hour. His accent is just so sexy! We’re going to meet up later on today.

Do you think that’s safe? Patsi asked. What if he turns out to be a psycho? I mean, to not call for so long and then out of the blue get in touch again? It seems weird.

You’ve watched too many movies. Besides, we’ll meet at a public place like a restaurant or a movie theatre. She tapped her palms together several times in a silent clap. I’m so excited! Maybe he has a friend. I could call and ask.

No thanks, Patsi whispered. The Math professor, Ms. Chan, had entered the lecture hall and the general chatter was settling down.

I’ll tell you more later, Megan said under her breath.

Patsi just smiled. She wondered what Megan would say if she revealed her own secret.

    SCENE 2

Patsi went straight to The Brew from the college campus for a three-hour shift. She usually rode home after work with owner Tamara – one of Lester’s rules since he didn’t want her riding transit alone after dark, and darkness came early in the winter months. Tamara was busy today, though, so Brett was coming to pick her up – unknown to Lester of course. Lester still didn’t know about their relationship. He and a few other people.

When Brett sauntered into the coffee shop, Patsi’s stomach did a little flip flop. Hi Brett. She wriggled her fingers in a pseudo wave. Just grab a seat. I’m not done for another hour. It had been a month at least since they had been officially dating, but she still felt butterflies whenever he walked into a room. He was just so good looking with his blonde hair, dreamy brown eyes and sinfully long lashes, not to mention his toned and tanned body.

He found a seat at one of the high tables.

Actually, it’s pretty slow this evening, Carmen, the other owner, said from behind the counter where she was restocking some tea. Why don’t you take off early?

You don’t mind? Patsi turned to look at her employer.

Of course not. You go on and I’ll finish cleaning up. Carmen smiled, her teeth white
