    (A Sweet Holiday Romance Novella)

    Chapter 1

Patrice Nelson tried to keep her eyes opened as she listened to her client, Emily Mitchell, rant about her ex-boyfriend. She disregarded her rumbling stomach as she made notes on her notepad, attempting to pay attention. Inside, she was craving lasagna with marinara meat sauce. Despite her present discomfort, Patrice loved being a psychologist. It had always been her dream, and Emily's love life was one of the things keeping Patrice busy in her line of work.

So you see, Dr. Nelson, I can't imagine my life without him. Jim is the love of my life, but I can't seem to get through to him, Emily raved.

Emily if you two are not together, why are you wasting your time thinking about him? Patrice asked patiently.

Because he really has a good heart. I know he does. If only he would let me know how he feels about me, and stop playing games, Emily explained.

Patrice made more notes on her pad. Her unruly stomach growled again, and she wished she had snuck a snack inside her purse. Why didn't I grab a granola bar? Then she glanced at her clock. Her session with Emily was over. Patrice then uncrossed her legs, sat her glasses on her desk, and put down her notepad.

I'm sorry Emily, but it looks like our time is up, she informed the young red-headed woman.

Already? It feels like I just got here, Emily stated. She rose from her spot on the chaise lounge sofa. Same time next week?

Patrice answered. You're leaving out of town this week right? Why don't we make an appointment after Christmas? She led Emily to the door.

That's right. My parents asked me to come home this year. I'll let you know my schedule when I get back. Thank you so much, Dr. Nelson. I really appreciate your time, Emily replied.

She hugged Patrice and exited her office. Patrice's assistant, Holly Martin, waved goodbye as Emily left the building.

I don't know why, but I'm tired all of a sudden, Patrice admitted as she sat in one of the chairs in the waiting room.

If it makes you feel any better it is your lunch break. Your next appointment is in two hours, Holly reminded her.

Great. I need all my strength before I talk with Mr. and Mrs. James, Patrice responded and grabbed her coat. Then she retrieved her purse from under her office desk.

As she marched out the door, she mulled over her next appointment. She knew she wasn't a miracle worker, but she was certain that Mr. and Mrs. James still loved each other. It was evident by the lingering glances they would share during their sessions. At one time, Mr. James even clasped his wife's hand as he shared his concerns about their unstable marriage. While Patrice knew all she could do was try, the choice to stay together would be up to the couple.

Patrice strolled to the elevator and waited for the doors to open. She grabbed her cell phone out of her purse and checked the time. She had enough time to eat and to do some last minute Christmas shopping. It was two weeks before Christmas, and she was planning to go home for the holidays. Her family could not wait to see her, for it had been two years since she had opened her own practice.

Business was growing and it demanded most of her time. The other reason she had not been home for Christmas, because her mother would always question about her love life. While her mother obviously wanted her daughter to be successful, she also wanted Patrice to have a family of her own.

The familiar ring of the elevator alerted Patrice, and as she walked through the metal doors. The elevator music kept her company as she thought about her life. Patrice was a college graduate, in addition to having earned both a master's and doctorate degrees.

She had opened her private practice, Let's Talk: Individuals and Family Counseling Services two years ago. It was a very successful business, and she was pleased with the effects it had on the lives of others. Patrice was happy, and could not understand why her mother was not satisfied with her life's choices. Therefore, instead of arguing with her mother during the most wonderful time of the year, she chose to stay away. The only problem with that was she spent her Christmas' alone.

This year, however, Patrice truly missed being around her family. She was the youngest of three children, which included an oldest brother and sister who were twins. Patrice always thought of herself as the oddball of the family because her brother and sister always made mother happy.

Her brother Robert was a lawyer and was married to his high school sweetheart, Yvette. Their daughter, Leah, who was two years old, and Yvette was three months pregnant with their second child, which was going to be another girl. Patrice's sister Renee, on the other hand, was an architect and owned her own firm. Renee married her childhood friend Kyle, a lawyer, and she was six months pregnant with their first child, a boy.

With both of her siblings married, her mother wanted her youngest daughter to
