    Chapter One: Grace

I slipped into the library ten minutes later than usual. My editor, Abigail, was already handing out the week’s assignments. I felt my stomach drop when Abigail’s eyes found mine and narrowed slightly just enough to let me know she was pissed.

Nice of you to join us, Grace, Abigail said, grinning in a way that made my heart race.

I’m sorry I’m late, I muttered quickly, My last class ran long.

It doesn’t matter why you’re late, Abigail snapped, Everyone else managed to show up on time.

It won’t happen again, I assured Abigail, Really, I’m sorry.

Well, Abigail cleared her throat, All of the pieces have been handed out except for one. Now, I’m sorry, but everything of interest has been assigned to those who were here on time. The only piece we have left is the profile of this week’s MVP.

The sports section? I asked, my eyes widening in shock, You’re kidding.

Not at all, Abigail smiled, Is that going to be a problem?

I opened my mouth, ready to argue, but I quickly changed my mind. There was no one around who would stand up for me. No one on the paper would dare question Abigail’s decision. I knew I would be kicked off the paper for good if I tried to get out of writing this article.

No, I sighed, It won’t be a problem. Who was chosen this week?

Trevor Montgomery, Abigail said simply. She stared at me for a second longer before turning her attention back to the paper in front of her, Now, let’s see. The next thing on our agenda for today is...

I let Abigail’s words wash over me without really hearing them. I couldn’t believe I was being saddled with the sports column this week. Things had already been bad enough at the paper since Abigail took over as editor, but now, they were bordering on unbearable.

The only thing I knew about Trevor
