    As I stepped out of the cab, I took a moment to savor the familiar sights and smells of my college campus. The Christmas holiday had gone by far too quickly, but it had been a memorable one. My mother had been very anxious about my returning to school, despite my assurances that I had survived an entire semester on my own just fine. Just before I left, my younger sister, Lauren, had added her own two cents.

    You can’t blame Mom for worrying, though, she had said as she entered the kitchen where my mother and I were having a conversation. I mean, you don’t really have any friends at college!

    Lauren, you shouldn’t speak to your sister like that, my mother had reprimanded gently.

    But I’m not lying, Lauren had defended herself. My mother sighed. Sometimes, Lauren could be a real handful.

    You’re wrong, little sister, I had protested. I do have friends, and I’m active in several clubs too. In fact, I’m a member of--

    Oh, big sister, book clubs and academic organizations don’t count, Lauren had interrupted with a dismissive shrug as she grabbed the water bottle she had come in for. But whatever.

    Don’t pay any attention to her, my mother had said, rubbing my shoulder comfortingly.

    I have no intention of it, Mom, I had reassured her.
