Taos Memories
Welcome to Taos, New Mexico
Taos is located in the north central region of New Mexico. The town is close to Taos Pueblo, the Native American adobe village and the tribe which it takes its name.
Beginning in 1899, artists began to settle in Taos and developed an art colony. Many paintings were made of local scenes, especially of Taos Pueblo, adobe churches and homes. Taos is home to more than twenty sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There are 80 art galleries in Taos.
The Taos valley provides many opportunities for recreation, such as fishing, horseback riding, hot air ballooning, hiking, rafting and mountain biking.
In the winter, many people come to Taos to ski the mountains, other winter activities include snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice skating, ice fishing and snowmobiling.
Taos is located near the Rio Pueblo de Taos, a tributary of the Rio Grande. Just to the west of Taos is the Rio Grande Gorge crossed by the Rio Grande Bridge.
Taos has a semi-arid climate with extreme variations of temperature and low rainfall. Even when summer days get extremely hot, nights can be cool. Discover Taos and Northern New Mesa, the Land of Enchantment at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and you will surely enjoy your vacation.
