    Part One: The Birthday Present

    Felix was best friends with his Grandpa Tom. Grandpa Tom was Irish and had a big red mustache and red hair. Felix's whole family had reddish hair. Felix had reddish-brown hair called auburn, and it was exceptionally messy this morning. Grandpa Tom sang Irish songs and whistled while he whittled wonderful things out of wood, usually dragons, which were Felix's favorite mythical animal, and he came to every one of Felix's kung fu competitions.

    This morning, when Felix came down for breakfast with his seven younger cousins, he sat in his favorite dragon-foot chair beside Grandpa Tom. Aunt Annie poured big cups of dragonfruit juice, and Uncle Bill set out bowls of Dragon Crunch cereal and milk for everyone, while Felix's five cousins made lots of noise. Grandpa Tom took a big whiff of Felix's mop of messy hair, and pinched his nose. P.U.! he exclaimed in his thick Irish accent, Felix, I hate ta say this on yer birthday, but you smell like a booger in a bog!

    Felix laughed and said, I guess you're right, Grandpa. I've been working so hard on my kung fu and my dragon model kits that I haven't even taken a bath for days. Grandpa Tom shook his head and smiled. Well, me boy, 'tis time you took one. When you're done with your Dragon Crunch cereal, take this present with you to the bathtub. I'll see you when you smell better than a stinky, wet dog, and we'll have birthday cake, he said, holding out a shiny green present. Felix said, "Thanks, Grandpa. Okay, I can take a hint. You're
