Chapter 1:

Origins of the Crusade – Soviet Union Invasion

The surprise invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 by the Soviet Union military shocked many nations. The war started in December 1979 to February 1989 and lasted over nine years. Soviet troops invaded Kabul on order from Moscow to replace Hafizullah Amin with the Soviet endorsed Babrak Karmal as head of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. In December 1979 began the first deployment of the army arriving in the capital of Kabul, they staged a coup, killing the Afghan President and installing a rival Afghan socialist.

The Soviet Union’s war and occupation of Afghanistan led to a jihad, a holy war in the country. The Mujahidin warriors rose up to fight the Soviet war machine with whatever weapons they had at their disposal. The holy warrior’s tactic was to draw the Soviets out of the cities and into the mountainous areas where they had the advantage. Foreign fighters started to stream into Afghanistan and join the fight. The Soviets soon became bogged down and found themselves in an endless war with no easy way out.
