Claire's Christmas Catastrophe - Kerrie Flanagan
Chapter 1
Snow, Snow, Snow
Something was different when I woke up. My nose felt like ice. I jumped out of bed, grabbed my slippers and my fuzzy blue robe. The lights on the little Christmas tree in my room were out. That was strange. I uncapped the red marker and made a big X on December 23. Just one more day ‘til Christmas! I went to see who else was awake. My little brothers’ door was still closed. That was a good sign. The house would be peaceful for a little while at least. Mom sat by the fireplace, trying to light a fire.
Good morning, Mom,
I said.
Good morning, Claire.
I went into the kitchen. I stopped and stared. Dad! What are you doing here? Don’t you have work today?
Have you looked outside?
He pointed to the window.
I couldn’t believe what I saw. It was snowing and the wind was blowing it everywhere. I could barely see the top of the swing-set and half of the shed was buried. I raced to the front window.
This is crazy!
I yelled. I’ve never seen this much snow!
Our cars were covered almost to the top. Nobody was on the road. No wonder Dad was still home. I went back into the kitchen. Dad took out the camp stove.
Why are you using that?
I asked.
The electricity is out,
he said, striking a match. That’s why it’s so cold in here. I need coffee. I can use this to make some.
Oh! Just like we do when we are camping.
Exactly. Can you grab the coffee for me?
Sure.
I went to the pantry.
