Jemma 3 - Clarissa Carlyle
Chapter 1
JEM SAT IN SHOCK FOR a few minutes as she let the phone call she’d received replay over and over again in her head. Someone had called CPS on her over the condition and welfare of Robbie. This was a nightmare. People didn’t call CPS on people like her, did they? She thought they were the people called when a child was being abused or starved, or worse.
Jem was someone who had always gone out of her way to make sure Robbie was well taken care of. She never wanted her little brother to want or need anything. Since he started school, she put a lot of effort into making sure he always did his homework, studied for tests, and showered and brushed his teeth every day. The truth was Jem sacrificed her youth to take care of her brother and worked hard every day to do what she could to prevent him from ever thinking about not having both a mother and a father. She would do it again in a heartbeat; there wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for her brother.
Jem sighed before hopping off the couch to her feet. Continuing to replay the message from CPS wasn’t going to help the situation. Neither was sulking nor being angry. She believed it was just someone blowing smoke up her ass. She clenched her fists as Maya looked at her with an arched brow, a look Jemma had seen many times before, a look that meant what the hell are you doing?
What is going on with you right now?
Though, Maya didn’t really need to ask.
Get up, you’re helping me,
she said, as she began to pick up scattered toys and magazines that cluttered the living room. Pan had been fully engaged in playing that afternoon, and his Legos, comics, and action figures were everywhere. She’d made the mistake of calling them dolls, when they were cleaning up the week before, and he came completely unglued. She made a mental note not to make that mistake again or she might give her poor brother a complex.
Cleaning?
Maya asked, as she climbed to her feet. This seems like an odd time to clean.
Yes. The CPS workers will look for anything and everything to go into their reports. This house needs to be spotless.
She made her way into the kitchen and returned carrying a bucket full of cleaners, rubber gloves, and sprays. She tossed a pair of gloves to Maya.
Fine, but I draw the lines at toilets,
she muttered, as she pulled them on.
Jem wondered who came over and cleaned her toilets for her if she was so squeamish. She laughed. Right now I just need dusting done, and while Robbie is in school, I’m going to run out and get some groceries.
Are they really going to go through your fridge?
Jem shrugged. I don’t know but I do know they have the right to go through anything they want, and I suspect making sure Robbie is adequately fed is pretty high up on the list.
I guess so.
What’s in there now?
Maya asked.
I think some jelly, a piece of cheese, and maybe old milk. He eats pancakes, toast, grilled cheese, broccoli, and drinks juice. If he ever has anything else I think he’s sick.
She opened the fridge. Oh there’s something in a Tupperware that’s sprouting. Should I throw that out?
Broccoli, really?
Maya turned up her nose. What kind of kid willingly eats broccoli? Yes, throw away mister sprout, I shudder to think what that could be.
Yep, says Pan has to grow big to fight Captain Hook and eat his broccoli.
Both girls laughed at the little boy’s imagination. It didn’t sound like she had healthy balanced meals in the house, she’d have to go to the store the next day and get some things to keep around, even if he wouldn’t eat them.
Jemma turned on some music and the girls cleaned. It wasn’t that she kept an untidy house to begin with, but some things often got neglected. For example, the three months’ worth of dust that had accumulated on the ceiling fan, or the dead plant hanging by the window. Yeah, letting the social worker see that she’d killed a plant was probably not the greatest of ideas. If they didn’t come soon, she could buy a new healthy plant or maybe a realistic looking fake one. Trying to stage the house for a visit made her feel kind of like she was doing something wrong before they came. She knew it wasn’t the case, it just felt weird for her to be faced with such a grown-up problem.
By the time Robbie made it home from school the entire house all but sparkled. The pantries were packed with more food than they could eat for weeks. The girls collapsed onto the couch in an exhausted heap. Upstairs, Robbie had vanished into the land of Minecraft for a couple of hours before doing homework.
You owe me big for that,
Maya grunted, nudging Jem with her shoulder.
Yeah I do. How about after this is all said and done, I take you out to dinner!
Oooo, dinner. Will there be dessert?
If you’re a good girl,
Jem teased.
Maya’s eyes lit up playfully. Good but you’re not getting lucky on the first date.
Jem snorted and rolled her eyes.
Bitch please. You know you’re easy.
Only for you.
Both girls erupted into a fit of giggles. It was only after the laughter and the tears were wiped away that silence lapped between them.
Jem?
Hmmm?
Jem’s head was resting on the back of the couch, her eyes closed.
What are you going to do about Daniel?
Jem opened her eyes and sighed wistfully. I don’t know, Maya. I. Don’t. Know.
I mean I see where you’re coming from and I see where he’s coming from.
She looked thoughtful.
Not helpful May, not one bit.
BY THE TIME JEM FELL into bed that night, she was exhausted. The house had never been so spotless, and everything had a place. Her
