Chapter 1
Finding Fun as a City Adventurer
An adventure doesn’t have to be in the wilderness
I wanted to be an explorer, but gradually found the world had been explored and that there was nowhere left, really. Once they climbed Everest in 1953, when I was 10 years old, I thought, ‘Well, that’s pretty much it now.’ But the idea of travelling and exploring and adventure was very strong.
Michael Palin
Adventurers!
Think of explorers of the past trekking through the undergrowth searching for treasure and lost civilisations. Think of voyagers sailing towards the horizon and discovering new continents. More recently, think of those intrepid individuals blasting off into space and its vast unknown.
Wish you were one of them?
We’d all like to release our inner Indiana Jones at some point, but these days that’s rarely possible.
So we have to look for adventures nearer to home.
Britain has beautiful countryside. The British landscape offers mountains, moors and lakes such as the Scottish highlands, the Brecon Beacons, the Peak District, Snowdonia, Dartmoor, and the Lake District. It can be argued that, while some of the countryside is vast, there is no true wilderness. However, although the wild areas of Britain may not be as enormous as the areas found in other parts of the world, they can still engender feelings of wildness and wilderness. It is still possible to trek into the wilds, although these days you are usually in range of civilisation and, often, wifi. Remember, you are never alone with a satellite phone.
And not all adventures have to be in the countryside.
Indeed not all adventures need to be outside.
It is possible to have amazing adventures in the city. There are plenty of opportunities for exploration and discovery within city environments. Just look around your local town and see the variety of indoor and outdoor spaces just waiting to be discovered.
In the city
The city is not a concrete jungle, it is a human zoo.
Desmond Morris
The majority of visitors are more interested in city sightseeing than in the night life or shopping opportunities a location has on offer. 75% of visitors say they are drawn to city centres by the local attractions and places of interest.
Our cities have evolved over time and are littered with intriguing items from their past. Some heritage takes the form of buildings and architecture found on our streets. Other heritage comprises the objects left behind and held for future generations in museums, galleries and stately homes. These items now become attractions for us city adventurer to discover and
