    Prologue

I slowly drove through the rusting, Herculean gates and into the metal yard. I kept glancing at the clock on my dash, but it was out. I had been given very specific instructions. I was to arrive at exactly nine fifty-two a.m. According to the clock on my phone, I was right on time. I pulled in and parked on the side of the office, away from any windows. I pulled out my phone and pretended to be preoccupied with it. Actually, I was just waiting. I was waiting for instructions from Anna. Now what?

There wasn’t much to look at here. It’s just one pile of junk next to another pile of junk and another. There were some conveyor belts and what looked like a crushing machine. I didn’t see one person. Nothing was paved, so the dust was layered thick upon everything. Maybe a light dusting would make this old beater look better. It was hard to make avocado green look any worse.

I saw some dust kick up at the front of the building, but I couldn’t see a car. I just hung low, sat and waited.

The text finally came a few minutes later.

Back of yard. Pull in garage. Pick up Tony’s load. Get out!

    Chapter 1-My Birthday

Wow. This is a really nice place Matthew.

My words fell on distracted ears. Matthew and Melanie had been bickering for the entire drive from our suburb of Arlington to Dallas. Tonight was my birthday dinner and my two friends were attempting to give me an evening out. I was responsible for setting them up together and maybe they felt like they owed me for it. After all, I didn't have a boyfriend and had absolutely nothing better to do. As we pulled up to the restaurant, my stomach started to hurt. I wish they would have told me how nice this place was. I was used to going to the typical chain restaurants where jeans and a t-shirt were perfectly acceptable.

I feel a little under dressed. I said.

You look fine. Everyone in Dallas is just uptight and pretentious. replied Melanie.

Why didn’t we just stay in Arlington then, I thought to myself.

The inside of the restaurant was very elegant. Chandeliers and white table cloths, with arrangements of lilies in the center, stretched out before us. Dinner was fabulous and Matthew even ordered wine. I hate when people make a fuss over me. I didn’t even want to know how much our meals cost. The Porsche and BMW parked out front were a good indicator. Their bickering, though not as intense as in the car, continued. I had developed a knack for tuning them out in order to still enjoy myself.

Our half hour drive back home consisted of more fighting between them. I daydreamed in the back seat to escape the hell I was trapped in. When we arrived back at Melanie’s house, Matthew decided to just go home. He had had enough for one evening. This is how all of our get-togethers seemed to end.

    Now what? said Melanie.

It was twelve thirty at night and I knew she wouldn’t want to sleep. Melanie had narcolepsy and at times would fall deeply asleep, but much of the time couldn’t sleep at all. We spent much of our time watching movies and playing video games. She had a lot of free time since recently losing her job at an IT company and I was working part time and going to school part time. We decided to watch a movie.

The couch is ringing I proclaimed.

    Where is it? she said.

I reached between the cushions and pulled out the phone.

    Ahh, here it is.

    Hello Melanie whispered.

She had a bad habit of speaking so low that it was hard to understand her. It drove me crazy. Actually, it drove everyone crazy.

It’s two o’clock in the morning. Don’t you think it’s a little late for an invite? I don’t think so. she said. All right then. Bye.

    Who was that? I inquired.

Craig. He invited us to come over for a fish fry tomorrow. I told him no way. Who does he think he is calling so late? she huffed.

I was ok with this decision. I don’t even like fish and I was only being invited along because Craig liked Melanie and he knew we were always together. He had to take the package deal. Melanie was always good about not leaving me out, although, I sometimes felt like the third wheel. Melanie was beautiful in a way that I never was and the men were always swooning after her. I didn’t mind the perks I got from it though.

The next day came, Sunday. We did our usual lounging around watching videos, playing games, and I’ll admit smoking a little weed. I felt I did a good job keeping my distance from it for the first 26 years of my life. I by no means grew up a pothead. My dad was very straight and smoking of any kind was not tolerated in his house. But as an adult, smoking weed seemed to fit in with my life just fine. I didn’t really see the big deal. Melanie and our friend Janie introduced me to marijuana less than a year ago. So far, nothing eventful had occurred due to it being around. I could
