Returning to college after the winter break was an event. New classes, new people, new professors but the same winter and it was still college. Without the contracts in his briefcase, the new semester would have been less; less exciting, less inviting, less alluring. With the contracts and a credit card with 50 g’s on it, Rory felt freedom he had never felt. Money can’t buy love but it can buy happiness though it may not last; what does? However, it is virtually guaranteed that poverty does not guarantee happiness either. On the whole, Rory preferred having the luxury of money in his pocket. But it was the contracts that put a buzz into his life that never seemed to abandon him. It buoyed him through everything. Just the option to abandon everything for a weekend and go investigate a contract was enough to give him a lift every morning and that lift usually carried him through the day. Of course that was the fantasy that he could convert the contract into actual sex, not a foregone conclusion.

For the first couple weeks, nothing really changed. He worked to get ahead in class and avoided social events that made him drunk and stupid. He flirted and stared and salivated over the co-eds flouncing around him. During each day, however, for some time he contemplated how to approach the contracts. When he thought past the fact that as the bearer they offered him sex, to the fact that he would likely be the bearer of bad news, somber news, it damped the buzz. But then he considered the value of being there when a woman was sad and the buzz returned which made him feel like sort of a shit. This sort of thinking ran his mind in circles.
