    Chapter 1

I said I’d be there. She stacked some papers in her hands and whipped a loose lock behind her ear. Ashely could be infuriatingly aggravating when she got on something.

    Ok, you promised.

Yes, but if you don’t let me go I won’t be able to leave on time.

Ok, ok. I’m getting there at six. Jennifer said everyone gets there early for happy hour.

Lycée rolled her eyes. Some of us have jobs, Ash.

    I have a job.

She felt bad immediately because she could hear the hurt in Ashley’s voice. She wasn’t one to look down her nose at other people and she knew Ashley was a little bit intimidated by her. Not that she was so impressive because she wasn’t. Ashely was a bartender and she was a lawyer who wasn’t using her education at all. She tried to explain how much more honorable tending bar was than tending a spoiled, indulgent billionaire brat but somehow it never got through to Ashley.

I know you do. But you know what I mean. If I don’t pop in his binky and put on his favorite bedtime show he won’t leave me alone to have fun.

Yep, ok, Ashley still sounded off. It’s kind of a dive bar ok?

    Yeah sure.

They like jeans and boots in this place. She kept pressing.

Look, I’m not going home first to change or I’m not coming back out. I’m tired. I don’t want to go. You promised me pizza, wine and movies not beer, burgers and boys. She laughed at her alliteration and so did Ash.

You’re such grump these days. Let’s have some fun tonight. Take one home and use the hell out of him.

Lycée laughed, that is the best idea I’ve heard in a long time but if he isn’t interested in office not so casual I may be out of luck. Thank God I bought batteries today.

Ashley hooted, Lycée! No mechanical loving tonight. They both cracked up and said goodbye on good terms.

Six rolled around and Brandt was still locked in his office with the girl he’d taken to lunch. Nobody was wondering what was going on because he’d picked a loud one. Lycée and Deb, his personal assistant, had locked the main vestibule doors to the executive offices awhile back trying to keep out extra ears from hearing the orgy going on behind the closed doors to Brandt's office.

Lycée stacked some folders for his signature, grabbed her toiletries kit that she kept in her side drawer and headed to the ladies’ room. She did some dabbing of oil and touching up of makeup, brushing of teeth. It didn’t look bad and she was going to leave it at that when she decided to take her bronze hair down from the chignon it was in. It was messy by then anyway. She brushed out the kinks and for once it looked spectacular after being set free from its bun. She took that as a sign from the gods.

Since she was making the effort she slipped off her jacket to reveal the halter top under. She’d found it at one of her favorite stores. The back plunged down dangerously low, clasping at the bottom in a row of buttons, but if the jacket never came off nobody knew it. And as a result she didn’t get all hot and sticky like could happen in a suit jacket. The front had a gathered plunging neckline that she made demure for day with some garment tape. She was having fun so she ripped the tape off and repositioned things so her cleavage was elegantly rounding at the edges but not falling out. This was getting good. She remembered she had some night heels in her desk and decided on making a shoe change. She was damn sure this was not a look that often ended up in the bar she was heading to but if she was going to stick out she might as well make it memorable for everyone.

She got to the area and had to park a few blocks down. She had circled once and the place was packed. It wasn’t exactly how she wanted to spend the night but she put on a happy smile because Ash was a sport who indulged what Lycée wanted to do more often than not. She walked up to the bar and started to lose some confidence in the sexy office marm costume she’d morphed into at the office. A lot of eyes turned, male and female, appreciative and not so appreciative. She wasn’t out to steal anybody’s anything. So she tucked her eyes a little and walked into the bar. Ash had texted that they were in the back at a table.

As soon as she walked in she regretted not going home to change. She more than stuck out. She saw some girls decked out but they were decked out in ‘come get me’ looks. Their agenda was obvious. She didn't want to get lumped into that group because of a lack of other options for which group to lump her into. Then she saw Ash waving frantically from the back and she relaxed a little. A little toss of her mane gave her back some confidence and she put on her confident office walk as she crossed the bar under some interested looks. The table they were at was full and happy. There were a lot of men and each seemed to have a woman attached to them. Some of the women seemed happy to see her, some not so much. Ash was at her side almost immediately.

You’re late. She was clearly buzzing because she had a bright red blush on her face.

I know I couldn’t find parking. I feel like Where’s Waldo right now? One of us here does not belong?

Ashley laughed, I told you to go home and change. Let me introduce you. Guys, girls this is Lycée. Lycée, the gang. You’ll figure out everyone’s name eventually.

Lycée gave her a look for that halfhearted attempt at introduction. Hi everyone. Nice to meet you.

She looked around the table. Some of the guys were older, some younger. They all seemed pretty taken so she didn’t know why Ashley had been making such a big deal about her meeting them. It seemed Ashely’s one goal had become to matchmaker Lycée into a relationship. Lycée had been burnt one too many times to really feel like walking that walk again yet. Relationships, for her, seemed to burn bright, hard and fade as darkly, softly. She wanted to find someone but maybe not that Friday, in a bar, after work, when she’d rather be home.

The guys all looked to be in ridiculous shape and she could see tattoos creeping out from under some of their sleeves. As her eyes quickly scanned she noticed the one closest to her was drop dead gorgeous even with what looked like some serious scars on his right cheek. He had a buxom, enthusiastic blond on his lap, but his dark eyes were seared on Lycée. It was so disconcerting and intense a look that she did a double take in surprise.

She was grateful when she felt Ash pull her away to the bar calling to the group, ok, we’re here to have fun not hang out with you old married people.

Are they all married, Lycée asked as they were
