This is, like the others, really a mini-biography of Bob Dylan which emphasizes the music that he has created. The author has had a lifelong passion for the music of the Fifties and Sixties and Pop music in general. He enjoys listening to the music of rock and roll and enjoys writing about the people who created it. This series is his way of honoring the people that have brought so much joy to our lives over the years.

Bob Dylan has been performing since about 1960. Born and raised in Minnesota, he left college to travel to New York to follow his dream of becoming a singer and songwriter. Today after more than 30 studio albums, plus singles, live albums and compilations, Bob Dylan is definitely a super star.

Bob Dylan has been and remains one of the most influential performers of the 20th Century. He was included in a Time Magazine article called “The Time 100: The most important People of the Century” where he was called "master poet, caustic social critic and intrepid, guiding spirit of the counterculture generation".

James Hoag has always been a big fan of Rock & Roll. Most people graduate from high school and then proceed to "grow up" and go on to more adult types of music. James got stuck at about age 18 and has been an avid fan of popular music ever since. His favorite music is from the Fifties, the origin of Rock & Roll and which was the era in which James grew up. But he likes almost all types of popular music including country music.After working his entire life as a computer programmer, he is now retired and he decided to share his love of the music and of the performers by writing books that discuss the life and music of the various people who have meant so much to him over the years.He calls each book a "love letter" to the stars that have enriched our lives so much. These people are truly Legends.

Introduction

I wasn’t born in Minnesota, but I lived there for 18 years of my life. I lived in southern Minnesota and I knew very well that Bob Dylan was from the frozen north, in Duluth. People in Minnesota are proud of two things, among others, Bob Dylan and Lake Wobegon with Garrison Keillor.

I wish I could say I was a fan of Bob Dylan right from the beginning. At first, I really didn’t get it. I really liked his songs that were done by other people, like Peter, Paul & Mary, but it took me a while to make the connection. I heard someone say recently, You can’t dance to Bob Dylan. I think that’s true to some extent. You might not even think Bob Dylan belongs in a series about rock and roll, but he does.

As a young kid, I was into rock and roll and boy/girl songs and dance songs and the like. Bob was one of the first to move popular music from the silly to the serious. His songs were about politics, social commentary and philosophy. It took me some time to catch up, but when I did I could really see what he was trying to say about the world around him.
