    CHAPTER I

    EMILY

    IT WAS LATE.

I pressed a button and the tiny screen on my phone lit up. Five minutes. It should’ve been there five minutes ago, and I should’ve been gone. Maybe.

My backpack was heavy. The thin little straps bit into my shoulders. How many times had I repaired them? Enough times that the straps were more patch than fabric. Hopefully they last through one more trip.

I sighed. The hot air passed through my lips and a little cloud of steam surrounded me. Even though the sun was starting to rise, the morning air was chilly and dense with fog. It was so thick that I could barely see across the bus station.

    What was I doing?

The little note burned in my pocket.

Come to Ferndon. Food and lodging will be provided. A generous compensation will be discussed after the assignment has been accepted.

    Signed,

    The Association

The letter was actually sent via a message sprite. Who sends those anymore? Normal people send emails, text messages, even letters. But a message sprite?

It delivered the information and poofed away into the air. I was left with with this note, a ticket, and a key.

I pulled it out of my pocket. It was brand-new, shiny without a single scratch on it. I didn’t even know where it led to. But I hoped.

    A home?

    Hey!

The sound snapped me out of my thoughts. I put the key away. Some girl had started yelling. I avoided looking at her. I didn’t need any trouble.

    Hey! she yelled again

This time she started to run in my direction. I pulled both straps of my backpack onto my shoulders and turned around. Maybe I would catch the next bus.

A hand grabbed my shoulder. My muscles tensed.

Hey! Hey! I was trying to call you! The girl said.

Her long dark hair fell over her face as she rested her hands on her knees. She gulped air in big breaths before talking again .

You’re gonna miss it! She said.

    Miss what? I asked.

    The bus! She said.

The girl pointed in the direction she had come from, and sure enough, there it was. As soon as I looked at it, the buss’s engine started to rumble. The girl grabbed my hand and tugged. Her skin was so warm.

Come on, She said, "or we’ll both miss it!"

So what did I do? I ran, of course.

    CHAPTER II

    EMILY

JUST IN TIME! THE girl said.

We collapsed into the seats, breathing hard and fast.

That was close, she said, if we were just one second –

She must have noticed that she was still holding my hand. She dropped it, and my skin was cold again.

I mean, if we were just one second later, we would’ve missed it! she said.

The girl pushed back her bangs with one hand and gave an awkward laugh. Can you imagine?

    I tried to smile.

    Yeah, I said.

The girl’s laugh faded away, and then we were quiet. The bus rolled on, jerking on the uneven road every now and again. I looked out the window at the foggy landscape. The sun was rising and warming the earth with it’s light. It seemed like these pink and orange tinged fields would go on forever.

Out of the corner of my eye I could see that the girl was trying her best not to look at me. Good. She’d stay out of trouble that way. The warmth of her hand had already left mine, but I could still remember it. When was the last time someone had held my hand? I curled my fingers into a fist.

Um, I’m sorry, the girl said. "I can be a little … pushy sometimes. I hope I didn’t bother you. I just saw you standing there, and I didn’t want you to miss the bus."

No, it’s okay, I said. Thanks.

A wide smile spread over the girl’s face, reaching all the way to her eyes.

Really?! Well, then, um… My name is Melinda! she
