CHAPTER 1

Welcome to Jen and Sherry’s. What can I get you? I said as I spoke to the person in the drive-thru using my headset. Like usual, the stupid piece of technology was being difficult and the voice that I heard over the earphones was crackling and breaking up.

I’d like a mint...chocolate... sugar...vanilla...regular, no make...dish. I translated what came through my headset as best I could, writing it down on my customer order form.

Sir, I’m sorry, could you repeat that a little louder into the speaker?

He spoke up I’d like a scoop of mint chocolate chip in a sugar cone. And one scoop of vanilla in a regular cone. No, make that a dish. Barnaby, what do you think?

What was the last part you wanted, Sir? A barn..a...by?"

No, sorry, Ma’am, I wasn’t speaking to you. I was speaking to Barnaby. He loves cones but they can be very messy for him. A dish would be helpful too. Can I get that combo? Some places either give you a cone or dish but not both.

We can accommodate your needs, Sir.

That’s mighty fine of you. The man on the other end replied.

No problem. Let me just repeat your order. That was one scoop of mint chocolate chip in a sugar cone. One scoop of vanilla ice cream, regular cone with a dish—

Yes Ma’am. I did forgot, but can I get a couple of spoons?

My hand was not greeted with the green stuff or loose change but something wet and hairy. I turned my head abruptly and stuck my head out the window, Ww...ww...wwhat is that? To my surprise, a wet tongue from a big hairy beast, hanging his head out the truck window, was licking my hand. Luckily, it was the cutest Cocker Spaniel with the most adorable eyes staring up at me. I scratched the friendly dog on his head. I suppose the vanilla cone and dish is for Barnaby?"
