    CHAPTER ONE

    Four years ago

    ––––––––

I’d done it again. Bobby The Tree McPhee, my tormentor and nemesis, was laid facedown in the dirt out on the playground, and somehow it was my fault. I wasn’t sure how the merry-go-round spun out of control since Bobby had pushed me off it. It made Bobby dizzy and seasick and it caused him to vomit all over everything. When the merry-go-round finally stopped, Bobby fell facedown in the dirt. One of the other kids from my class gave him a nudge with the toe of his shoe and all Bobby did was moan.

Good one, Booger. The Tree’s gonna be really mad, the kid said.

Bobby’s gang of bullies helped him up from the dirt and carried him to the nurse.

Booger, you are dog meat. You’ll pay for this, you freak, one of Bobby’s goons yelled at me.

Such was my life. When I got beaten up, angry, or scared, strange things would happen to those who hurt me and it was always worse for them. I’m not sure why. Bobby wasn’t the only tormentor in my life—there was someone worse, and he was always somewhere close by.

The bell rang, school was out, and it was Friday. I couldn’t wait until I saw my mom. She had been searching for my Halloween costume, and I hoped she had found it. I ran to the parking lot, and there he stood.

Oh! I adjusted my backpack, slowed my steps, and pulled my ball cap down to hide my face. He stood next to my mom’s car, arms crossed. I hoped my mom was in the car to shield me from him. I knew he was going to let me have it.

Booger, hurry up, Malcolm yelled. I picked up my pace a little and when I got to the car I reached for the back door. He stepped in between me and the car door. No, you get in the front seat.

I tugged on the strap of my backpack. Mom said for me to always ride in the backseat, I whispered. Where’s my mom?

"No, you get in the front seat, now," Malcolm shouted.

I took a step back and glanced at him from under my hat. His face was beet red, he had opened the car door, and his arm was fully extended as he pointed to the front seat.

Get in now, Malcolm shouted again.

I took a few more steps back. My cheeks burned. No, Malcolm, call my mom. I’m not getting in the car until I talk to my mom.

Booger, there is something wrong with you. Most kids would jump at the chance to ride in the front seat.

Maybe so but you smell like Bobby’s sweaty feet.

Malcolm reached and grabbed me by the back of the neck. His hand clenched down, and I squirmed to get free. Suddenly, Malcolm jerked his hand off my neck and screamed in pain.

"Booger, what are you wearing? Are
