NLP Memory Palace - Richard Gray

If you have been taking the word Palace literally up to this point it is time for your first reframe. A Memory Palace can be based on any physical location of your choosing. Of course, there are factors to consider that will determine how effectively you can evolve your Palace. It is these factors we will focus on at the first level to ensure your Memory Palace has the best possible foundation upon which everything to follow will be built. To support and assist in conveying concepts and meanings throughout this book, the blueprint and transcripts for a complete NLP Memory Palace have already been created.

STEP 1 - CONSIDER YOUR OPTIONS

So what qualifies as a Memory Palace location? The first rule of Memory Palace when it comes to choosing a location, and the only rule really, is that you must be familiar and congruent enough with the choices and imagery you create that they can be recalled from memory without hesitation. Consider where you live as an example, can you close your eyes for a moment and take a virtual walk through your home? As you do so, how easy is it for you to take mental notes of the sundry furniture and features present as you walk past?

If it is easy for you then your home would qualify as a Memory Palace. But please don’t go at the first offer, you may want to consider a more expansive location. The following are some location suggestions to help feed your thoughts. (1) London Underground (2) A City Centre (3) A Theme Park (4) An Island (5) A Symphony Orchestra. OK granted, that’s a specialist one, but it would work for somebody.

    STEP TWO - TEST DRIVE

You may already have an idea for a location or you may be playing with a few options, and by default you will have already visualised them as you think of them. If one location stands out for you as a natural choice then excellent, that means your thoughts are aligned. If this is not yet the case then take the one that is currently uppermost in your mind. As you return to it now, walk, or float if your prefer, from wherever seems the most natural entry point noticing as you do, the natural features in the order you come to them. As you note the features, this time try associating one simple item to each of the first three features as you come to them. The item examples are as follows: Bananas, Tea bags, and Honey.

A basic rule of effective memory associations is that the images you create should be exaggerated or unusual in some way (this topic will be covered in depth soon). Imagine your first feature interacting with a bunch of bananas in some way (even though your first feature might be inanimate you can still give it life. The sky is not the limit, neither is your imagination). Perhaps your first feature slips on the bananas and falls comically on its behind. Now for your second feature and Teabags, Perhaps the PG tips monkey is angrily throwing teabags at your second feature and it is batting them back. Now that you are getting to grips with the concept of association try marrying your third feature with honey. With just a touch of practice, making associations gets very easy to do. Guaranteed.

    STEP 3 - MAKE A PRELIMENARY CHOICE

You can expect the simple memory associations you have just made to fade naturally after a few days. Clearly, more sophisticated methods are called for to accommodate the more complex NLP Pattern structures used throughout this book and you will want them to last a lifetime. Not just a few days. The environment you choose to base and model your Memory Palace on will serve you best if it is a place that gives you pleasure and inspiration when you visit, as oppose to a more a functional or temporary location such as a work place or rented accommodation. In order to start moving this exciting project forward I wonder if you have already decided on your location. Just in case the jury is still out here are a few more suggestions: (6) A zoo (7) A shopping mall (8) A cruise ship (9) Your school/college (10) The Starship enterprise?

As I sit writing this chapter Stephen Hawking’s Universe documentaries have been playing in the background. It is a fair bet that if the great man uses a Memory Palace it will be modelled on the universe. As for me, I have used the park that my balcony overlooks for the palace you will soon be walking through. Ok feeling a little inferior now, perhaps shouldn’t have put those two examples together in the same paragraph. I joke of course and encourage you to be happy and congruent with your own choice as, once chosen, this will become the foundation ground for the most exciting building project you may ever undertake.

    LEVEL TWO

    2. Chunking Your Memory Palace

Congratulations, you have reached the end of the beginning. If you are familiar with Well-formed outcomes and other strategies you will be aware a key aspect of chunking a task appropriately is to avoid overwhelm, leading to a loss of motivation. Converting NLP, or any other field, into a Memory Palace, some might say, is a big task therefore to make things easier we can organise and divide them into the following stages:

CHUNK 1 - LIST CORE TECHNIQUES

List all the core language patterns and techniques you want to install in your Palace. Here are some suggestions:

    Anchoring

    Beyond words language patterns

    Breakthrough sessions

    Breath of life

    Compulsion blowout

    Double dissociation

    Fast allergy

    Healer within

    Incursion

    Meta model
