Lost in Dreamland - A VR Horror Story - Quentin Q.
Part One
Jeremy refreshed his browser, anxious and excited to see the news. He was expecting a shipping confirmation for his brand new mobile VR goggles. Videogames had always been his true hobby. Actually, they were all he really cared about. He had the tendency to completely lose himself in those games. Virtual reality would surely take his addiction to a completely different level.
As his Gmail inbox loaded, he could barely contain his own excitement. The shipping confirmation was there. Now it would only be two more days until he held his brand new VR headset in his hands, and just in time, right after his parents left for their two-week vacation. That would give him enough time to spend countless hours lost in virtual reality.
It wouldn’t be the first time he experienced virtual reality. In fact, his first experience was during last year’s video game expo in Las Vegas. A relatively new company presented their very first pair of VR goggles. He loved the experience. The feeling of actually being in that virtual world was nothing short of amazing. The moment he put those goggles on, he knew he had to own them. Luckily for Jeremy, the tech giant New Horizon Technologies
had recently announced their own version of a virtual reality headset called Project Dreamland.
The difference between Project Dreamland and the VR goggles he had first tried out was that this headset was completely wireless. There was no need to connect it to a high-end computer via cables. Project Dreamland had all the fancy hardware built into it. This included an ultra-high resolution display as well as sophisticated motion sensors, an incredible field of view and built in headphones with 3D positional audio. In other words, this device was built to provide the ultimate virtual reality experience.
Jeremy had always been something of a shy person. He also wasn’t particularly tall either. His skin was very pale due to the fact that he never really left the house. He didn’t have the best eyesight, and yet, he refused to wear glasses.
Growing up, he only ever had one friend, Paul. Since both of them had similar personalities, they mostly played videogames together.
The two days he had to wait to get his hands on his precious VR headset seemed to go on forever. He didn’t even leave his room anymore. Just to build up his excitement even further, he was constantly reading reviews of the headset he was pining for. He knew that he wasn’t going to take off the headset anytime soon after its arrival. He just had too many games and VR experiences to try out.
Friday evening came and Jeremy’s mom and dad were ready to leave. They told him to take good care of the house while they put their cases in the trunk of their SUV. They would be gone for the next fourteen days. Jeremy didn’t even know where they were going. He didn’t even bother to ask. All he could think of was his VR headset.
As his parents drove down the street, Jeremy couldn’t help himself. He was smiling like a madman. His most amazing adventure was just about to start. Since his headset wouldn’t arrive until midday the following day, he figured the best thing to do for the time being was to order a pizza, watch a horror movie, and just go to bed. Sleep would bring him closer to his dream; Project Dreamland to be exact...
Saturday had finally arrived and Jeremy jumped out of bed, excited like never before. Today would be the day he would experience virtual reality the way it was destined to be experienced.
As he spent the morning moving the furniture around in his bedroom to make some space for his VR explorations, he didn’t realize that it was almost noon. He glanced at his smartphone to check the hour and was suddenly stopped in his tracks by a familiar sound. It was the cheerful ding-dong
of the doorbell. His VR headset had finally arrived.
Jeremy rushed to the front door, almost tripping over the hallway carpet, and yanked the front door open.
Mr. Willow? This is for you. I just need your signature right here.
Jeremy signed the receipt and the UPS guy left in his truck as quickly as he had arrived.
Jeremy closed the front door
