Introduction: Boys In Trouble
By many measures, boys in America are in trouble. They are not performing as well in school as girls do, they do not seem to be maturing as quickly emotionally as previous generations, they face a confusingly wide range of models for what a man is to be, and they are growing up more often in single parent households or in foster homes. In fact, more than 1/3 of all boys will grow up without a dad at home, and another 40 percent will be born out of wedlock.
In addition, a huge majority of young people who are diagnosed with ADHD and then drugged into lethargy are, in many cases, boys. As The Deseret News stated in a recent article on the controversial War on Boys
in the U.S.: Name a daunting number—higher suicide rates, how many drop out of high school or graduate from college or even take medication for attention deficit—and girls fare better than boys.
The stakes have never been higher for boys to be raised well. Millions of households in the next decade will need a strong father figure. Tens of millions of women in the next decade will need a good husband. Tens of millions of children in the next decades will need an attentive father. Where are all of these men going to come from, if they are attending college less frequently, employed less frequently, and bereft of role models for manhood in their own households?
Clearly, the importance of raising adolescent boys well has never been more critical. The stereotype of a boy lost in video games, inattentive at school, uncommunicative at home, and unaware of proper relationship and sexual boundaries with girls has some truth to it, or the stereotype would never have formed. When we hear or read of a teen carrying a gun or two into a school, movie theater, or mall and shooting multiple people, do we ever suspect that it is a girl? No, we don’t, and with good reason.
Of course, the current generation of adolescent boys is not all threatening to become the next mass murderer, but the increasing frequency of these violent outbursts, the stress factors that exist in many teenage boys’ lives, and the lack of support for them to become well-rounded, kind, ethical men all spell potential crisis. This e-book is written to help you as a parent learn how to better raise your adolescent son(s). It is hoped that your positive parenting, whether you are alone or with a mate, will help turn your son into the type of man that our country’s families need, and a man of whom you can be proud.
What is the War on Boys
?
The idea that boys are in crisis is not just a general impression that any of us can gain by walking down Main Street in our town. It’s not gained from watching the way boys act on the school bus, the athletic field, in the classroom, or in the home. This idea is actually backed up by facts, and no one has articulated this difficult period in American history for boys better than author and American Enterprise Institute resident scholar Christina Hoff Sommers, who first penned the bestselling The War Against Boys: How Misguided Feminism is Harming Our Young Men (2001), then wrote a follow-up book, The War Against Boys: How Misguided Policies Are Harming Our Young Men (2013).
When asked recently by a journalist what the War on Boys
was, Sommers answered with this insightful and revealing reply:
"It’s more like a war of attrition. No one wakes up in the morning thinking, ‘What horrible thing can I do to boys today?’ But boys and young men have been massively neglected. Women in the U.S. today earn 62 percent of associate’s degrees, 57 percent of bachelor’s degrees, 60 percent of master’s degrees, and 52 percent of doctorates. When an education-policy analyst looked at current trends in higher education he quipped, only half in jest, ‘The last male will graduate from college in 2068.’"
How did this happen? Sommers points out that women have been aided so effectively by changes in law and funding that they have bypassed boys in many different areas. As she succinctly put it, Hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent to improve girls’ achievement in sports, math, and science. Today, it is boys who need help.
This e-book is not intended to become overtly political, but Sommers’ use of the word neglected
rings true. The largest consequence of so many fatherless households, dads needing to work overtime or two jobs to provide, and a society seemingly appalled by the way many young men dress or tune out, has left a large mass of boys for whom no one is caring or guiding. If this is not corrected, we should not be at all surprised if the next generation of leaders has few men ready to take the helm of families and institutions. This is not to imply that women are not fully capable of being leaders, but it is to state very clearly that men are absolutely necessary for a society and family to function at optimal levels. Who is going to care for these neglected boys? Does one live in your household? Chew on that word for a moment and ask yourself if you have neglected your boy(s).
If so, don’t despair! This e-book is not intended to make you feel guilty. Read on in the following chapters and learn how you can pay much-needed attention to your son(s), whether you are a mom, a dad, a single parent, or other caregiver. A little investment in the life
