Planet: Earth
Memories flooded Etana's mind as she walked down Main Street, but the images she saw in her head didn't match the view which lay before her. Glass shards covered the sidewalk and once-prosperous businesses now stood lifeless and abandoned. The colors were dull and the air was stale. This was nothing at all like the Main Street she remembered.
When she was a child, Mr. Harris at the bakery would give her a chocolate chip cookie every morning while she was on her way to school. The middle was warm and gooey every time, just how she liked it. She always held it for a moment before biting, especially in the wintertime, just to feel the warmth and allow the scent to enchant her senses. Then, further down the street, by the time the cookie had long been eaten, she would pass by Ms. Irene and her florist stand, where the alluring smell of roses beckoned her to pause and savor the moment. Then came Clara's Boutique, whose windows always showcased the most beautiful dresses Etana had ever seen.
But she'd never been able to afford one of those gowns, and now the boutique was an empty shell. The florist stand was gone. Mr. Harris's bakery was no longer in business, and all the buildings in between were likewise empty. The street was silent as it lay devoid of cars and people. There was no one at the cafe. The library's shelves were bare and broken, and the door to Mindy's Salon hung sideways on a single hinge. Etana walked alone down Main Street, and the buildings loomed over her as if they too wondered why.
At the end of the street stood the small gymnasium and dance studio her parents had owned once upon a time. Etana reached into her coat pocket and thumbed the key. She took a deep breath and blinked back tears.
She came to the door and tried the key. It still worked. Relief washed over her as she stepped inside, though she hadn't expected the locks would be changed. Main Street had been deserted for
