Zara!
I heard, Zara!
My best friend, Rachel Antigua, screamed loudly to get my attention while I picked and prodded at my outfit: a dark blazer over a navy blouse and skirt.
I am beautiful,
I said, eyeing the strange figure in the mirror. I am beautiful.
The figure stood awkwardly in the mirror with her chocolate skin and thick black hair hanging freely by her shoulders. I stood up straight and tried once more to believe the words that I had been repeating for the past four months.
Zara,
I heard clearer now. I turned around to see Rachel decked in Louis Vuitton. What the hell is taking you so long? The meeting is at ten. You know that.
With her long golden brown hair and Latina roots, she was beautiful - a word I often associated with her.
I do. I just- I’m coming, okay?
I said before returning to look at the mirror. Instead of leaving, she stayed watching me.
You need a man,
she said with a growing smile.
Ugh,
I said, don’t get started.
You do,
she continued. As a successful black woman-
Rach-
No, as a successful black woman, you deserve to have a successful man, too. You need love, Z,
she said.
Need I mention Trey?
I said before she scoffed. And-and Martin and Matthew-
They’re all jerks,
she said, None of them deserved you.
This time I was the one to scoff. I grabbed my belongings around the sink and walked out of the bathroom and into my large bedroom.
Tonight,
Rachel began, there’s a charity auction that you are going to.
Before I could respond she added, I already RSVP’d.
Well, un-RSVP,
I said grabbing my designer heels from the bottom of my closet.
I can’t,
she said still following me like a puppy dog. I stopped right in my tracks and eyed her. Her cocoa brown eyes were wide and persistent.
It’s for a good cause?
I asked to confirm. She nodded quickly. I sighed and said, Fine. I’ll go.
She squealed quickly after and hurried me out of the room reminding me how late we’d be for the meeting.
We headed out the door and through the busy city streets. Buildings clung precariously to the bright blue sky peeled out above us as we turned a corner and entered the intersection. Soon, we had arrived.
Z. Gerald Enterprises greeted me as I left the car. Zara Gerald, I thought, look at what you’ve created. Rachel smiled at me and led me quickly through the glass double doors. And without any men, that’s for sure.
Inside, the cold air conditioner hit me with a smack and, with that, a wave of faces. The secretary smiled at me as we passed while my assistant, Melinda, ran up to me quickly with her usual face that always seemed to remain cheerful.
Ms. Gerald,
she said with her pale skin glowing a rosy red, um, the meeting’s just about to start. I’m glad you made it. Oh! Here are the files that Finance wants you to review and, um, there’s also a guy who’s here to see you.
She scrambled with the files in her hands yet managed to keep a smile.
Guy?
Rachel said more excited than me.
Yeah,
she confirmed smiling at her, From Pearson Enterprises. You know, a representative.
Rachel’s face fell before she said, Don’t keep Z too late. We have plans tonight.
Then she waved and left.
Melinda turned back to me and asked, Should I reschedule Pearson?
No,
I said balancing the file in my hands, that’s not necessary.
I walked toward the elevator as Melinda followed swiftly behind.
Once we were inside she asked, How about Ostrovsky? And Fournier?
Damn,
I said, Okay, um, schedule Ostrovsky for tomorrow morning and Fournier after lunch.
She nodded as a sharp bell indicating our floor rang.
I exited the elevator and entered our floor. Offices stood between glass walls and on a mahogany panel above the secretary’s desk was written Z. Gerald Enterprises. Melinda led me past the kiosks and into the meeting room.
I entered blindly and apologized for being late. When I settled down and actually looked up, I saw that every seat was occupied. Though startled, I managed a smile and said, So, I believe we are on the topic of launching the Gerald-Trenton project where two highly organized establishments in this city come together to produce an increase of the availability of medical supplies which, in turn, will not only raise profits but also the overall quality of health throughout North America.
I looked around the table to see men and women in dress clothes nodding dryly. And does Mr. Trenton happen to be here?
I asked hoping the CEO we were partnering with actually bothered to show.
My eyes darted across the table before a Caucasian man in his mid-thirties stood. His dark brown hair was ruffled and his
