Chapter 1 – The Little Death

The wooden post rose a few feet out of the center of a stone platform in the courtyard of the fortress. Near the top of the post hung two iron rings. This was the whipping post. Spectators pressed their way into a semi-circle around the platform. Roman soldiers in their gleaming armor and red capes kept them at a proper distance. Two soldiers tore Jesus’ robe off his shoulders, exposing his back. They pushed him up the three stone steps of the platform and brutally threw him face down to the pavement. His hands were then tied tightly to the iron rings and he was stretched out pitifully in the early morning sun.

Two professional Roman lictors stepped forward and removed the short-handled scourges from where they hung on the post to one side of the platform. The heavy leather tentacles hung straight down, weighted at the ends by small lead beads and hooks. The bigger soldier on the right raised his flagra to a position behind his head, held it in place, and made eye contact
