Tennessee Governor Isham Harris joined the staff of Army of the Mississippi commander Albert Sidney Johnston in early 1862 and was with Johnston when the general was mortally wounded on Shiloh’s first day. Harris later wrote about the experience, as related in Colonel William Preston Johnston’s account The Life of General Albert Sidney Johnston.
