About this ebook
Mia’s tempest is a long look at what could go wrong if our world couldn't fight back against the forces of nature and apocalypse, how that fight might affect individual lives, and how just one person’s unwillingness to take responsibility for their actions could damn us all. In the span of a single year, we walk in the shoes of those people, to try and understand what it is to be human in a world full of horror, zombies, magic, climate change, and fear of what the next season might bring.

Chapter 1
Allergies
March 4th
I moved into my own place today. It’s still cold out, but the snow is finally melting off. Mom brought over a slow cooker and some food for me; she is sooooo mother hen right now. Even with me out of the house, she is still trying to take care of me. Daddy, on the other hand, just smiles and says his little girl is finally all grown up. When mom wasn’t looking though, he handed me about $400 to make sure I would be okay this month. He was all stern and shit but he had a tear in his eye. I can’t wait for school to start. Oh, before I forget, Mike finally told me he was willing to give being exclusive a shot. He was so sweet about it, but true to form, he had to be a dork and say something stupid about being all about the party life and he wouldn’t give that up just yet. I said yes, and told him he could teach me how to party right then. I can’t believe he likes me so much, it’s only been a few months, I think I love him!
March 14th
Mike helped me move the last of my new furniture today, and then we both went down to the office and got signed up for our summer classes. He was such a dork; he tried to take all the same classes as I did, but didn’t have the credits for a few of them. He said he would catch up real fast and show me he was smarter. That’s funny considering he doesn’t know the first thing about botany.
March 23rd
Mike and a few of his friends came over tonight to throw a party. It was the first time I had seen weed, or smoked it. I had such a great time. We did shots and smoked till the sun came up. I have never been like this ever before, I used to think that getting the munchies was a joke, but man all I want is a burrito! No, corn chips… wait…. Nachos! Yes, I want chocolate pudding… hehee be right back…
March 28th
The guy on the news was talking about how spring was coming early this year, and I was trying to do my homework, but Mike and the guys just wanted to party again. I tried to hold out, but I really wanted to get high again. School doesn’t seem to matter quite that much when I am high, but it also seems to make me more observant, so I took a hit or two…you know, just enough to relax. But the guy on the news kept talking about how the allergies season had already started and that people should start getting their shots and shit early. I laughed at him and told Mike I needed a shot to protect me from the pollen attack. He came over and offered me a shot of himself.

Ok…the trees outside are blooming and the grass is greener but I don’t know….this year something seems different. I talked to Mike about it, and he said I was high and needed to cut back on the grass. Then he said he needed to cut his.
April 7th
Mike was over again tonight and we had a few beers with his friends Tom and Jim. Chris could not make it, something about his allergies. I tried to bring up my observations about the way things seemed different this spring, but no one would listen really. I guess I waited until it was too late, too many beers and too much weed, and now, they just think I am really weird; but that’s okay ‘cause I know I saw the tree move, didn’t I?
April 19th
We went to see Chris today in the hospital, he looked really bad, all those red bumps, his body so swollen, and he being as pale as he was. He could barely talk, but wanted to see us so bad he screamed himself hoarse ‘til the nurses let us in. He was talking about how his entire body felt like it was on fire, but it was just a reaction to pollen. We had seen him get sick before, but never like this. It was really… I don’t know what to say about it, it just was really scary that his allergies could get so bad. On the way out, I noticed that every room in the hospital was full.
The nurse saw me looking and simply said, Allergy season.
Her smile was a little condescending.
April 19th, 11pm
We just heard from Chris’s family. He died in the hospital today around 8 pm. They would not say anything other than he was unable to breathe on his own anymore and passed away. I don’t remember ever seeing Mike cry like this, so heartbroken over the loss of a friend. We went onto the porch and tried to relax, but there was so much pollen in the air we had to go back inside. Mike’s eyes were still red from crying, and he could not stop rubbing them. I feel so helpless right now. The best I could do was offer to shower with him and try to comfort him.

The weather channel this morning was talking about the perfect weather we’ve been having, and stated that it was not going away any time soon. It’s been, like, four weeks now of 73 and light high altitude clouds with a light breeze out of the northwest. It’s the first time on record that the entire country has been the same temperature for this long. Light evening showers; the plants have been growing and seeding like mad. One change though: the pollen
