    Chapter1

    ––––––––

Kyra Solomon squirmed slightly in her seat as the imposing figure of Mubarak Qasim stepped from behind his enormous mahogany desk and addressed the room. The other employees of Omega Music Management Company focused their attention on their towering boss, awaiting the announcement he had ominously mentioned in the morning memo. Kyra studied the man’s face, but Qasim remained unreadable, a skill honed over decades of dealing with musical acts, agents, lawyers and producers.

As you know, Qasim bellowed to the group of managers gathered in his lavish office, Omega Music Management has had a rather long run of success as of late. He paused and leaned back against the huge desk. I think it’s time we take a step forward. We need to expand our reach. Until now, we’ve mainly dealt with hip hop and rap acts. I think now, while we’re riding a high, is a great time to think about working with other music genres.

A buzz went up from the room as the other managers reacted to the announcement. Alicia Ward, Kyra’s friend and co-worker, leaned up.

Dear god, please don’t let us have to deal with Country artists. she whispered over Kyra’s shoulder.

Kyra chuckled a bit and looked up to see Mr. Qasim glaring down at her. She felt her face grow hot under his disapproving gaze and tried to focus her attention on the swirling pattern on her skirt.

Qasim asked for silence and continued. We already have a new client who I believe will aid in our expansion and make us an even bigger force in the management industry. he proclaimed. He motioned toward the door and his assistant opened it and waved someone in. Kyra watched expectantly as an intern entered, followed by a tall, pale figure all in black.

Behind her, Alicia gasped. What the hell is that? she quietly asked Kyra. Kyra shrugged and studied the strange man who had been ushered into the room.

He stood approximately six feet tall, but his slouch made his true height difficult to judge. His clothing was black from head to toe: a black bandana around his head, a rumpled black t-shirt with sequined skulls on the front, obscenely tight leather pants, and studded black motorcycle boots. His hair was black as well, shaved on one side and styled into short spikes on the other. Colorful tattoos covered his upper arms, and his neck and wrists were draped with an assortment of chains and bangles. He caught Kyra’s gaze and narrowed his kohl-rimmed eyes at her.

Mubarak Qasim has lost his mind. Kyra thought to herself, shaking her head. Surely, her boss wasn’t serious about the agency managing the likes of such a clichéd example of a musician. The thought was ludicrous. She stole a glance back at Alicia and rolled her eyes as Mr. Qasim placed a huge hand on the man’s shoulder and introduced him to the crowd.

Everyone, he said, This is Xavier Quinn. He is a rock musician and just the kind of new talent we need to put Omega Music Management firmly on the map.

The room remained quiet as the managers tried to determine whether or not Qasim was serious or if the whole meeting was an elaborate hoax. Finally, the group began to murmur their welcomes to the new client who watched them from Qasim’s side, an expression of complete disinterest on his face. He turned and looked at Kyra again and gave her a sensual little smirk. Kyra schooled her features into the most pleasant expression she could muster and nodded toward him. Clearly satisfied with himself, Xavier Quinn turned away and Kyra bristled.

At twenty-eight years old, with several years of experience dealing with rowdy and sometimes unruly musicians, Kyra was accustomed to male attention. They told her she was beautiful, though she never particularly felt so. She figured she was an average woman of color. Tall and athletically lean, Kyra had smooth skin the color of rich mocha and large almond-shaped hazel eyes flecked with green and gold. Her jet-black hair hung to her shoulders in tight, shiny ringlets. Her slim frame was accentuated by delicate curves at her hips and full bust, giving her a pleasing silhouette. She was often complimented on her looks and sometimes leered at by clients and co-workers alike, but over the years, she had learned not to pay much attention to such things.  Still, Quinn’s overt staring unnerved her.

"I hope I don’t have to deal with that joker," Alicia said, a little too loudly.

Don’t worry, Ms. Ward, you don’t have to, Mr. Qasim stoically replied. Ms. Solomon will be working with Mr. Quinn.

What? cried Kyra, jumping up and out of her seat before she could stop herself. She looked at Qasim, and then at Quinn, who winked at her. Qasim gave her a hard look before gesturing to Quinn. Xavier, this is Kyra Solomon. She’ll be working with you and handling the business end of things for you. If you need anything, come to her.

Quinn held out a milky white hand to Kyra and she could see that his nails were painted dark blue. She reluctantly offered her hand to him and he took it, giving it a loose shake, which made the metal bangles on his wrist clang noisily together. A pleasure to meet you, Ms. Solomon, he purred. I’m sure we’ll work well together.

Of course you will, Qasim interrupted. Now, all of you get out of my office and back to work.

Kyra stood frozen to the floor as the rest of the managers began to file out of the room.

Are you okay? asked Alicia as she passed by.

I’m fine, Kyra told her friend. I just need to talk to Mr. Qasim for a moment. Alicia nodded, understanding, and left the office, but not before stealing another look at Xavier Quinn and barely stifling a laugh.

Mr. Qasim looked down at Kyra and grimaced as she approached his desk. He motioned for the intern to take Quinn out into the hall.

What is it, Ms. Solomon? he asked impatiently when they were alone.

Sir, Kyra began. I really don’t think I’m the right person to manage our new client. I don’t really have any experience with rock artists... She let the sentence trail off as Qasim folded his arms over his broad chest.

Is there a problem with the new client, Ms. Solomon? Qasim asked, raising an eyebrow.

Kyra hesitated to answer. She was sure Quinn had been pushed off on her because none of the other managers would want to work with him. The thought angered her. It was true that she was only a junior manager, but she worked very hard and had helped several new artists successfully break into the music business. She deserved some respect. She straightened her back and calmly addressed her boss.
