Chapter 1
––––––––
2010
Leo Grit walked toward the college campus in Greensboro, NC and noticed a crowd of students yelling and laughing with their cell phones lifted high. Easing closer, he watched two male college students punch and kick each other with singular ferocity, while the crowd egged them on. Sounds of flesh smacking flesh merged with the siren of Campus police who arrived just as Leo fished his phone from his pocket and started recording.
Instead of surrendering peacefully, one of the guys punched the cop while trying to hit the other guy. The cop landed on the ground and called for reinforcements as he stood slowly. Within moments shrill sirens pierced the air and students took off running in every direction. One fellow lay swollen and bleeding on the ground, the other swung on the cop and was wrestled to the ground.
Leo glanced at his watch, and grudgingly put away his phone as he hitched up his bag and ran to the Orion building for his appointment with the Committee Chair. Excuse me,
he said to a student standing just inside the room as he tucked in his plaid cotton shirt. Moving with purpose he headed toward the side of the large classroom filled with rows of seats, tables and undergraduate students.
Chairman Pollock waved him over. There you are, wasn’t sure you’d make it in time.
His dark brown eyes gleamed as he looked over the crowd. Great turn out to complete the survey. You shouldn’t have any problems researching the social program and completing your thesis on time. I know you want to move on and start your company in the private sector.
Standing over six feet with a head full of white hair, Pollock’s thin frame vibrated with excitement. This could be big.
He looked down at Leo, a plea for agreement in his eyes. The man only saw dollar signs and bragging rights for the University.
When he initially presented his idea the program was a simple locating tool to help people in emergencies. It had seemed a fun idea when he started but with all the bells and whistles the Chairman strongly suggested
including the name Cheat Sheet it wasn’t fun anymore. Pollock claimed they would appeal to more students using the cheating angle to gain more research participants and looking at the crowd, he may have been right.
Leo’s expressed concerns over the viability of marketing a program for the purpose of partners spying on each other were dismissed and replaced with the claim of a unique marketing niche for the program, catching cheaters. Despite his lack of enthusiasm for the changed project, Leo created the app and stood on the precipice of becoming that guy
who helped relationships fall apart.
Yes, Sir.
His gaze skittered over the audience and landed on a small group of females whose expressions clearly said they’d rather be anywhere but here. He decided to pitch the program as he initially wrote it and not play up the unsavory parts.
But you need to be careful, avoid the mistakes of Zuckerberg, that whole Facebook things’ not pretty.
He leaned closer, his pointy chin appearing longer as his eyebrows furrowed. Try not to include too many hands in the pot if you can, it’ll be smoother in the long run. A few others will want in on Cheat Sheet because it’s remarkable, revolutionary, but keep it small, hold it close. That doesn’t mean you can’t remember the university or faculty.
He slapped Leo on the back. Ready to get started?
Leo hoisted his bag up his shoulder, cleared his throat and wished he had the same level of enthusiasm as Pollock. Nodding, he pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose and ran his hand through his shaggy brown hair. Yes, whenever you’re ready.
He patted his bag, felt the weight of his equipment and moved forward. I’ll setup over here.
Chairman Pollock grabbed his arm, halting him. Look alive! Show some excitement, it’s catchy. Remember this is your thesis, the final step before receiving your MBA, make it count.
Leo jerked at the barely masked desperation in Pollock’s tone
