    About the Author

    Fanged

I shouldn’t have told anyone about it, I should have kept it to myself. So of course when my girlfriends asked me my advice on a gay bar to go to, I told them I’d never been to one. A massive freak out ensured and before I knew it, I was having to admit that no, I’d never gone beyond kissing before.

Well we need to change that! Shannon all but shrieked at me. We’re going. This weekend. Or else.

Really, I had no intention of going. I tried to tell them it was because I didn’t want to drink, or that I wasn’t feeling well, but we all knew the truth. I was too self-conscious to go to the clubs. It was hard for me to go have a good time when I spent the entire night worrying that I was the only virgin on the dancefloor.

It’ll be fun, my friend Shannon insisted while she helped me pick out an outfit. Most of my clothes were more suited to the library and to class than to the clubs, but somehow she had managed to put together something that would look really sexy, if I could pull it off at least.

It’s not my thing, I tried to explain to her, but that’s when she finally lost her patience with me.

Gabe, stop it, she finally snapped. You need to get over your own bullshit. You’re twenty-one and have never been to a club so we’re taking you out. If I hear any moping from you, I’m done. Got that? So what if you’ve never slept with anyone before, you think anyone can even tell?

She was right, she was completely right. It wasn’t my virginity giving me a problem, it was how I viewed myself.

You’re right, I said, forcing myself not to get upset. You really are. Fine, let’s go out. I promise I’ll have a good time. No more complaining from me.

Good, she said with a firm nod.  Who knows, you might even meet someone. That would be cool, right?

Honestly, it would be awesome, I told her, and I meant it.

Too bad my nerves came back with a vengeance on the day we had planned to go out. Despite my own fears, I knew I had to get over them and deal with it. I wasn’t going to ruin a night out with my friends, so even though I wasn’t feeling exactly club ready, I put on a happy smile when Shannon showed up at my door to pick me up. She was going to be DD to make sure I could get the confidence boost from a few drinks.

I am so glad you got over yourself, Shannon said as she double checked my outfit for me.

Well, I’m trying, I said with a nod. I didn’t want to tell her that my nerves were back and my confidence was falling like a stone.

Now hurry up, it’s time to go, Shannon instructed.

Not ten minutes after Shannon was finished making sure that I was ready, the rest of the girls we were going to the club with arrived. There were six of us total, me being the only actual gay guy, and once everyone was loaded into Shannon’s SUV, we were at the club and I had to prove to my friends, Shannon, and myself that I could forget my insecurities and have a good time at the club.

The club itself was better than I expected. I figured all the gay clubs would be places with a thumping techno music and bright lights, but in fact this place was a little darker, a little mellower, and a lot more my speed. The drinks weren’t all that cheap, but my friends wanted me to have a good time and that meant I wasn’t buying many for myself. Even the music was pretty good and after I had a couple fruity drinks, I was finally feeling up to dancing.

Even with a pretty good buzz going, I kept thinking that everyone on the dance floor somehow knew I was a virgin, but I pretended not to care. There was no way they could actually know that and I forced myself to forget them
