    The First Step

    A is gulf forming.

    I can feel it.

    This distance made

Of so much more than miles.

    I am sorry for that.

    I guess it was inevitable.

This space between us in which

    A fondness begins to creep

    Tinged with grief,

And a sweet melancholy mingled with regret.

    In time everything will change.

    Not the distance.

    That will only grow.

    You are becoming a memory

Even as you stand before me.

Feelings surrounding you in my mind

Will surface and I will smile.

My heart will cradle them with tender affection,

And I will remember how your shadow crossed my soul

    And took my breath away.

But for now it holds a sting.

My spirit stutters when I feel the bite.

Even as my arms open to let you go

The pain begs me to call you back.

But I love you beyond this place.

    So I’ll stand here

while the hues around me fade

and watch as your steps carry
