    I changed the setting on my multi-tool to micro-blade, a ten-centimeter-long, molecule-wide sonic which cut through almost anything better than a Sol diamond-tipped knife, and glared at myself in the mirror.

    I didn’t particularly like the person looking back at me.

    Guilt forced my hand up, though the nearly-silent hum of the blade sent bumps rising under my skin.

    I cut.

    Just below the band, and long, dark curls fell to the floor.

    Short hair is easier, in space. Long hair takes too much effort, too much water. Platform Eight mined ice as well as metals from the asteroids, but even on Eight, water was rare. My long hair had been my only remaining vanity; I worked in what still tended to be a man’s profession in a man’s world. If I was smarter, I would have worked at the Watering Whole, which catered to more than just a lust for alcohol. My… acquaintance… owned the place, and after a few beers let slip that her girls and boys made triple what I did. But no, I went into law enforcement, which on Eight meant policing the residents, rebuffing pirates, and answering to the station director.

    Tears pricked my eyes.
