Syme’s, the best restaurant on Platform Eight, required reservations at least a month out. I’d only finally said yes to a specific date for dinner with James a week ago, but he’d still told me to meet him at Syme’s tonight. I had dressed up—God help me—in a subtly patterned emerald shipsuit so different from my normal black or gray that my own reflection in windows had startled me three times on the way over. Each time, my elbow brushed the tiny tech gun and Station Security badge tucked into a custom-made pocket on my right side—a pocket that didn’t show and didn’t make me look fat, which made it worth every credit. Luckily it was my left elbow and ribs that still ached from having been shattered… My right side was fine.
Mostly.
My right foot… well, I’d probably be limping by the end of the night, despite the slippers that provided support without being boots.
I was lucky to be alive.
Which was why I had agreed to this dinner in the first place. I’d thought I was going to die, and—despite my rule not to become intimately involved with co-workers—had given James a reason for us both to survive.
