    About the Author

    The Ambush

Saddle weary gunfighter, Gus Baxter, squinted up at the relentless sun, as he rode his horse slow and steady over a dusty, rocky trail.

A short distance from Gus, and hidden in an outcropping of large rocks and boulders, Jed Haskell, a half crazy young squirt with a sick obsession, waited.

As Jed watched Gus from the cover of the rocks, Gus pulled his horse to a stop, removed his hat, wiped his sweaty forehead with his sleeved arm, put his hat back on, then picked up his canteen to take a swig of water. As he did, Jed quietly slid his gun out of it's holster and with a twisted smile, took aim and squeezed the trigger.

A loud report and a puff of smoke sent a bullet tearing through Gus Baxter's right arm. Gus winced and cried out in pain as his horse leaped up and bolted forward. Gus slumped over his saddle as he spurred his horse to a hard run.

As a wounded Gus Baxter rode away, Jed holstered his gun and let go a snide chuckle as he pulled a thin cigar out of his shirt pocket, then a match. He chomped down on the cigar with his teeth, then dragged the match over the rock until it produced a flame. As he put the match against his cigar, Jed gave a toothy grin and let go a demented chuckle.

    The Unexpected Arrival

Sarah worked a small plot of ground. She wore a modest, worn out dress and a wide brimmed hat covered her head and face from the hot sun. She was plenty tired but continued hoeing a newly planted garden next to a small, weathered gray, two room cabin. Sarah's eight year old son Ethan was pretending to help, but spent more time throwing dirt clods at an invisible target. Ethan hollered Sarah, stop yer playin an fetch me some water.  Ethan's unhappy answer was, aw, okay Ma.

Then Ethan ran to the well, grabbed
