    What's a Calaskan?

    by Michael R Dougherty

    Yes, I'm an Alaskan.

Now when you meet an Alaskan, you may be expecting them to look like this.

Alaskans wear red plaid wool shirts.

Alaskans wear big wide suspenders, holding up rugged work pants.

Alaskans were rough, tough work boots.

Alaskans wear those wool hats with floppy ear covers.

And Alaskans wear big bushy Alaskan beards.

But I have to tell you...

Some of the women in Alaska... don't look like that.

Actually, I was born in California but I was raised in Alaska - so I guess that makes me a Calaskan.

    We're Moving Where?

    by Michael R Dougherty

When I was just three years old, we were living in Northern, California.

One evening my dad, Ray Dougherty, came home and said to my mom, Louise Dougherty, hey, let's move to Alaska.

Now my dad had served in the Army during WWII and he was on an anti aircraft gun crew. During the war, he was sent to Adak, Alaska in the Aleutian Islands. On the way to Adak, his flight stopped in Anchorage, Alaska. My dad saw only a little bit of Anchorage, but he thought Alaska was beautiful and he decided then and there that he would like to return some day.

So here we were in Northern, California and dad comes home and says, hey, let's move up to Alaska now.

At the time, I was three, my sister Anna was two and mom was expecting our little brother Tom. But as amazing as it sounds, mom said yes, let's move to Alaska.

And after some fancy negotiating on my part, they agreed to take me with them.

So we went north, way north - north to Alaska.

    The Popeye Effect

    by Michael R Dougherty

When I was five years old, my family lived in a small log home near downtown Anchorage, Alaska.

One evening, at dinner time, something happened that I'll never forget. And it was all because of a cartoon character.

Now when I was a small boy, one of my favorite cartoon characters was Popeye. You know... Popeye the sailor man.

"I'm strong to the finich, cause I
