    Chapter One

    Sipping my last drink behind the bar before closing, I looked around at the regulars. The band was packing up for the night. The final song they played still echoed in my mind. Irish music made me dance even though, on its best days, my sense of rhythm wobbled like the folks heading for the door. The singer tried to pick up the hottest-girl-that-night. A young, beautiful college student who hid herself in her group of friends each time he approached. He struck out, like usual.

    Daniel was a good man with an amazing singing voice. The gruff attitude and furry body type didn’t do well in a beachside club where tourists and locals lived in bathing suits. I still remember the day he went to a salon and came out clean and pink. It didn’t fit him.

    Mary Elizabeth, my lady needs a drink. He shouted across the near empty place.

    She’s on her way to the door. Do you suppose she wants it in a to-go cup? I teased.

    His Scottish accent was thick with drink. Dammit, girly, wait for me. He wobbled in her direction.

    I’ll get you a round of drinks for her and her friends. The ploy worked, he weaved in my direction.

    They looked to me for help. Girls, you go outside, and I’ll bring them to you.

    Laughing, they pushed the door open vanishing into the night.

    They’ll wait for me. My furry friend didn’t believe the words as he spoke them.

    They’re children, Daniel. Let them go. Handing him a coffee thick with cream, I’d hoped he thought it had liquor in it. The last thing Daniel wanted to do after rejection was sober up.

    Why won’t you marry me, love? He slurred a question, already forgetting the young beauty.
