About this ebook
A selection of modern poetry and verse which will appeal to a much wider audience. It is gritty, witty and not always pretty! A selective serving of food for thought served unapologetically and often coldly. This simple , non pretentious poetry covers topics and issues we all face in life and within this modern world in which we now dwell. It deals with the deviance of power, personal struggles which we all experience, the challenges we all face as well as the hopes and dreams and expectations we all harbour. Often quoted as 'The People's Poet' Pete Wilky is at times inspirational, occasionally outspoken and sometimes controversial though he is completely and wholeheartedly committed to the cause of....

Seeing Through The Smoke - Pete Wilky
1. Smoke and Mirrors.
I may be looking into the mirror but I am seeing through the smoke
I question the world around me while wondering why it's broke
how come everyone is suddenly consumed with possession and materialism
irrespective of the cost to life, guess that's the price of imperialism
they want a one-world bank and a one-world order
they want ownership of everywhere regardless of border
financial terrorists now take us all to war
whilst convincing us that hatred is worth fighting for
first discover your difference then use it as a tool
since you're a secondary citizen and a primary fool
who failed to speak up as the banks took your money
while the front-bench laughed they found it so funny
now politics is sponsored bought and sold at will
and all you're really worth is the ringing of their till
corporate band-wagons have gained momentum and pace
while the common man keeps losing the race
still the rich get richer and alter the picture
by throwing more poverty and pain in the mixture
they sneer at the poor and flick at their noses
even knee-deep in shit they still smell of roses
because they misinform the masses through the medium of media
and cover up their tracks that are stained with paedophilia
theft and corruption, dishonesty and fraud
with a cost to this world that it cannot afford
when a hundred people own most of the wealth
and set the price of your future, your lives and your health
what kind of world have they slyly created
where even humanity has been desecrated
now mankind chokes on evil and on terror
but I've seen through the smoke so I now look in the mirror!
2. Be Who You Are.
be yourself, be who you are, be who you want to be
for you will find your truth in you and it will set you free
pretending to be what others see will get you nowhere fast
you'll be forever in the shade of the shadows that are cast
because to be yourself you must shine your own light
you must learn how to challenge and learn how to fight
you must learn how to speak so that others listen
and fill in your gaps so that nothing is missing
if some do not get you then why be concerned
just stay true to yourself and the stuff that you've learned
so untether the shackles and break free from your mould
and tell your story as it should be told
be confident, not arrogant, be upright and bold
or you might as well die before you get old!
3. Why Flicker?
if you wanna shine don't blow out your candle
whenever life gets too tough to handle
add fuel to your fire and ignite your flame
and if others get excited then you do the same
why flicker when you could be flaring
there's nothing discovered without any daring
so strike a light and shine so bright
and you'll realise that life's alright!
4. In Unvanquishable Numbers …
in unvanquishable numbers the people are waking
and becoming wise to the piss that's been taking
by overlords with a deviant agenda
who have put our glorious globe up for tender
they'll sell her short to the highest bidder
who will keep all the gold as the debt gets bigger
they're all about possession and ownership
and controlling the masses with pure bullshit
telling the lambs what the lambs want to hear
the wolves hold the fort with fiction and fear
and silently the flocks all dutifully obey
still circling the place they are destined to stay
unaware that freedom's not a gate
it's a self-belief and a mental state!
5. Lost And Found.
you'll never really find yourself unless you're truly lost
or discover what you're truly worth by keeping fingers crossed
you'll never see the light you shine by sitting in your shade
or ever live the life you like by accepting one that’s made
you'll always be asking questions if your answers are not found
so turn a different corner and dwell on different ground
one day you will find yourself exactly where you should be
somewhere between contentment and absolutely free!
6. Promises and Lies.
they'll promise you they'll make it better
they'll promise you they're honest
they'll promise you that red is redder
and then break every promise
they'll convince you that the world is ill
they'll convince you they're the cure
they'll convince you to take their pill
and to swallow more manure
they'll cajole you, they'll tease you
they'll sanction you and freeze you
they'll nail your boots to a wooden floor
so you cannot move nor walk no more
they'll smile in your face as they lie
they'll smile as the poorest die
they'll laugh as you lose
your house and your shoes
whilst you're left wondering why
they'll steal as they've always stolen
and they'll blame all the Poles from Poland
or the Russians from Russia
the out of work pusher
just to keep their egos swollen
they think that they're above the law
they think that we don't know what they're for
but the people are woken
and those people have spoken
now it's time to settle our score
vote with your conscience not just a cross
which'll cause you anguish, struggle and loss
vote with integrity, vote with compassion
just don't vote for those who now seem in fashion
and if you think that you really have choice
then why not raise your voice
because as you all sit mute in silence
you'll be the victims of their violence!
7. Manmason.
Cold face carved into rock of pain
toughening tighter as it takes more strain
Of every twist and every stroke
and hammer strike which makes it broke
Rough edges smoothed by teasing hand
to lift and let this statue stand
Yet grey and pale its skin yearn hue
grades of reds and shades of blue
Blended by the artists dream
to paint again a shining scene
A landscape of loving's beauty bare
for all observers hearts to share
A recreated masterpiece.
8. Heart Upon My Sleeve.
some would maybe say i wear my heart upon my sleeve
and that i'm far more honest than most would have believe
but nobody will change me believe me i've tried
cos i'm just this cool fella with fuck all to hide
i tell it as it is and i never mince my words
i speak the same to the blokes as i do to the birds
because in my own eyes everybody's equal
they're just humans, just people
no one is lower and no one is higher
and i ain't phased by a person's attire
or whether or not they drive a flash car
or come from next door or come from afar
people are people that's how it goes
they're either these or they're either those
just take 'em as you find 'em and never pre-conceive
just remember that the honest wear their heart upon their sleeve.
9. Another Day
another day just slipped away
just like it did just yesterday
so as i mourn another night
i know come morn i'll find my light
and this darkness now which leaves me blind
will suddenly shift and my sun
