    Chapter One

    Mila’s First Day

    ––––––––

I was up before the sun – and my alarm. Not that it mattered very much; I needed to be up early anyway. It was my first day at a new job and I was already a wreck. My nerves were frayed and I had as much adrenaline running through my body as if I'd already downed half a dozen espressos.

    ––––––––

Get a grip, Mila, I muttered to myself as I stumbled into the bathroom to take a shower.

    ––––––––

I let the warm water pour over my body, soothing me as I tried to get my thoughts and emotions under control. It wasn't like my new job was protecting the country's nuclear codes or anything that important. I was just the new personal assistant to Vincent Stone. Of course, from everything I'd heard and read, Vincent Stone thought he was as important, if not more so, than the country's nuclear codes. But it was a job and more than anything, I needed a job at the moment.

    ––––––––

To say he was high maintenance was doing high maintenance people a disservice, from what I'd heard. But I suppose that's to be expected when you're dealing with a self made billionaire who was routinely rated one of the country's most eligible bachelors and beautiful people. I'd imagine that sort of recognition might go to your head a bit.

    ––––––––

Not feeling any better, though slightly more human, after my shower, I threw on a robe and headed out to the kitchen for some coffee. I poured myself a cup, added my favorite flavored creamer – it was one of the few indulgences I allowed myself – I stepped out onto the small balcony. Taking a sip and savoring the flavor, I listened to the waves crashing and smelled the salt air. And that did the trick – the anxiety that had seized my mind and body immediately began to ease its grip. Our apartment was a couple of blocks from the beach, but in the silence of the early morning, you could hear the waves and smell the ocean. It was heaven to me. I closed my eyes and thought about the journey I'd taken and the future I was charting.

    ––––––––

I'd moved from the rural flatlands of Kansas to the glitz and glamor of Southern California – Huntington Beach, specifically – a little more than a year ago. I had big dreams of becoming a star. I'd done some modeling and had some small roles here and there, but so far, my big break hadn't come. But I wasn't one of those starry eyed idiots who move to California without a game plan. I'd always been too practical for that. I had a good chunk in savings, plus a generous gift from my grandparents, and that had sustained me for quite a while. But I didn't know when my big break was coming – though I knew it would – and with my savings beginning to dwindle, I knew I needed a job.

    ––––––––

Through a friend of a friend I'd made while on the audition circuit, I got a meeting with Vincent's business manager and voila, I got the job. Of course, from my friend, I'd also gotten the lowdown on Vincent, and it didn't exactly paint the most flattering picture. But the pay was outrageously good and the job would allow me the flexibility to continue chasing my dream, so I knew I couldn't turn it down.

    ––––––––

    You're up early.

    ––––––––

I turned and smiled as my roommate Kelsey stepped out onto the balcony with a cup of coffee in her hand.

    ––––––––

Did I wake you? I asked.

    ––––––––

Kelsey shook her head. I have to be on set in an hour.

    ––––––––

I'd met Kelsey through Craigslist when I was putting my plan together to come out to California. Like me, she was looking for a roommate to share expenses. Southern California was an expensive place. But we'd gotten on well from the first day and over the last year, had become the best of friends. We were alike in a lot of ways, but were just different enough in others. We'd been able to share our experiences and teach each other a lot. We pushed each other to excel and strive for more. We shared in each other's triumphs, and commiserated in our failures. There is nothing I wouldn't do for Kelsey and I knew that there was nothing she wouldn't do for me.

    ––––––––

Kelsey was born and raised in Southern California, but like me, was chasing Hollywood dreams. She'd had a little more success than me, and had landed a few roles here and there – including a few speaking parts – and I couldn't have been happier for her. Her star really seemed like it was on the rise and though I can't deny that there was a part of me that was jealous, I really did want to see her succeed.

    ––––––––

Oh, that's right, I replied. How exciting. Think you'll get to meet Matt Damon?

    ––––––––

She laughed. I doubt it. I'm only an extra.

    ––––––––

Don't shortchange yourself, Kels You have lines. You're a little more than an extra.

    ––––––––

Kelsey shrugged. It's not that big of a deal. You're starting your PA job today, right?
