    Man Crawling Under Siding Doors

"G randma, I saw a man crawling under the closed gates of the railway siding!’’ I stretched out a packet of my grandmother’s favourite savouries -‘ribbon pakoda’ from my mother. ‘’The train was moving quite slowly as we passed the siding. I saw clearly. Who could it have been, grandma?’’

Must have been stationmaster Pedro’s madcap nephew, Albert.’’ Grandmother helped me put away my clothes and said, Albert is harmless, don’t make him into a villain you need to follow about all the time you’re going to be here, ok?’’ She had seen the pile of Nancy Drews I pulled out of my bag. "Come, let’s have tea. It’s our magical time of the day.’’ I followed her with the tray of tea and cream biscuits. We dipped our biscuits in tea sitting on my grandmother’s backyard, watching the orange sun dip into the Arabian Sea.

"I remember one sunset you were here, you were barely two then. You wailed away that the sun had got drowned!’’ Yes, this tea with the setting sun was our special time, no doubt!

I’ll run across to Cleta’s house for just a while, grandma. I threw the words over my shoulder and ran across the railway tracks filling my lungs with the sea breeze, to the call of a couple of seagulls begging the waves to throw up one last fish before they fly home.
