Chapter One

No. Damn it, Steven, I can't take on another new performer. I don't have time, Margaret Nelson snapped at the impeccably dressed suit standing near her desk. Without missing a beat, she continued to tap out a steady rhythm on the keyboard of her computer. Appointments, emails, portfolios, photo shoots, and record label meetings—all these things were part of her job in making their newest talent a huge success. She already had three very needy clients on her roster. Taking on a fourth wasn't possible.

Come on, Margaret. You're the best and this kid needs to be groomed. He's got the down home country boy thing going on and he needs to be molded into the hot country star we know he's going to be.

Steven Taylor owned and operated Mega Country Talent. The biggest country music agency representing up and coming country music stars and the new talent he wanted her to take, could mean a big break for her. She had the talent and the drive to make it as the top agent and have the best of the best in country music under her wing, but she still had rungs to climb. This new star could be the first rung—if she could only make the time. She'd heard from others his voice brought goose bumps to your arms and made you shiver. Time wasn't something she had much of these days.

At thirty-five years old, fine lines and small wrinkles had begun to show on her face. No matter how much she worked out, cellulite and small love handles made her realize age was creeping in and she had absolutely nothing to show for it except a loser for an ex-husband and a family who continued to hound her about finding someone to settle down with and have children.

No, Steven. I simply can't.

Then I'll take Melissa off your hands and give her to Mike.

A quick glance at her boss told her the seriousness of his statement. Melissa Hart, pain in the ass extraordinaire needed a firm hand, not someone who would baby her along and pat her hand when she threw her normal four o'clock tantrum.

I want to see Margaret, now! The high pitched whine coming from the hall signaled Margret's appointment with said spoiled child.

Can we discuss this after I deal with Melissa?

No, we can't, Steven said as the door burst open.

Melissa waltzed in with her blonde curls piled high on her head, her makeup so dark she looked like a hooker. A tight white tank top showing off her midriff and belly button ring, hip hugging jeans and three inch stiletto heels completed the floozy look.

Margaret, we had an appointment and the loser at the front desk wouldn't let me back here.

I'm in a meeting with Steven, Melissa. I realize we had an appointment and I informed Steven I needed to meet with you. Margaret raked her gaze over Melissa's outfit and shook her head. You need to quit dressing like a hooker. You have an image to maintain and what you're wearing right now isn't going to cut it in the country music industry.

I'm not wearing those drab colors and pointed-toe cowboy boots you want me to wear. I refuse, Melissa snapped, crossing her arms under her rounded breasts.

Then we have nothing more to discuss. Steven, I would appreciate you reassigning Ms. Hart to Mike, Margaret said, watching Melissa's eyes bulge and her mouth drop open.
