Dedication
To my dear friend author Melissa Bradley for her deliciously naughty mind. And my witty pal Erica Dananay for her amazing taglines.
Chapter One
Po werful bubbles swirled around her sore muscles, creating the much needed relief she had dreamt about a week ago on the arduous trek up Machu Picchu. The one time she should have traveled light and didn’t. As usual she had lugged more equipment than necessary, but a good photographer never knew what might come in handy. The spectacular views of rugged peaks and glacier-carved valleys, along with the vivacious Peruvian children, had made all that baggage worthwhile.
She sighed and toed the gilded hot water tap and appreciated the ease to bring a gush of heat to her cooling Jacuzzi.
When was the last time she’d actually taken time to relax and enjoy life? Certainly not between that wretched eleven day train ride from Moscow to Beijing and her short time in Peru. Eight time zones played hell on a girl’s skin. She glanced in the oval mirror at the dark circles ringing her eyes and laughed. Emily Raccoon should be her new byline.
With one hand she adjusted the satin pillow at her neck, and with the other reached for yet another tourist brochure supplied by the hotel. She leafed through the glossy pages and shook her head at the poor craftsmanship of the blurred photos.
When was her last time in Paris? She dipped below the bubbles and came up through a cloud of lavender scented air. Bath salts are pure luxury.
Oh yes, the anniversary of the Pyramid at the Louvre. She had trucked into town and caught a snap of Pei shaking hands with Mitterrand. Made her quite a tidy bundle. She had to laugh at her youthful cockiness, but the francs were a good amount for a twenty-year-old know-it-all. The lace curtain fluttered in the breeze. She stared out at the setting sun and wondered where those other twenty years had gone. So long ago. The past was more like a dream.
She forced her attention back to the poorly printed information she held in her wet fingers, disgusted as they stuck to the pages and the rainbow of cheap ink dripped into her tub.
Page after page offered guided tours on crowded plush motor coaches which were simply not her style. What she really needed was a map of Paris to plot out her own route. She pinched a petit four off the silver tray and popped it into her mouth. What sights most interested her?
The Eiffel Tower was a must. Should she walk the stairs to the top? A cramp started low in her calf, protesting her thought.
Okay, no climbing.
She massaged the sore muscle before adjusting her leg closer to a powerful jet. I get the message, taxis only. Now behave. At the tower we’ll ride the elevator.
Thank God, no one heard her talking to herself. Another occupational hazard from years of working alone.
The thin pamphlet melted under her damp fingers and she dropped the shreds to the floor. For many years she had dreamt of this week and planned every moment. She just needed to be sure to leave enough time to indulge
