    Chapter One: Introduction

    Ghosts by Henrik Ibsen was written in 1881. The play was first staged in 1882 in Chicago, Illinois. The play was staged in America by a Danish company that was on the tour of the United States of America.

    Most of the plays written by Henrik Ibsen present a scathing commentary on the nineteenth century morality. The present play is also one such play. The play investigates the issues such as religion, venereal diseases, incest, and euthanasia.

    Since the subject matters were not usual, the play instantly became controversial. A lot of negative criticism followed the staging of the play. However, in the following years, the play began to fare better, and it gained a lot of popularity.

    Eventually, it began to be considered a great play. Ghosts has its significant historical importance in the world of literature.

    The play was originally written in Danish language. It was originally titled ‘Gengangere.’ The word if translated means ‘ones who return,’ or ‘revenants.’

    This term is generally used by the people in Norway for the people who frequent the same places, such as pubs, opening, nights, parties, etc.

    The connotation of the word ‘ghosts,’ in the present context, is different from the definition of the English word ‘ghosts.’

    The play was first published in 1881 in the month of December. It was the play that followed Henrik Ibsen’s famous play A Doll’s House. Ibsen was living in Sorrento while writing the present play.

    Chapter Two: Plot Overview

    As the play begins, the audiences are introduced to Jakob Engstrand. He has a supposed daughter named Regina. Jakob wants to open a sailor’s establishment.

    He tries to convince Regina to come there and work there, but she refuses to come there. Regina works as Mrs. Alving’s maid, and she is too proud of
