    Chapter One

    It all started with one single shot. That wasn’t that different, really. Most wars, battles, moments of civil of unrest, coups, and riots started that simply enough. What set this one apart was the victim, one Miss Victoria Smith.

    Miss Smith was more than one of the ever-growing elderly who were struggling to survive in the growing streets of Flint, she was the Mother of Flint. What she lacked for in money, she made up for in heart. Members of all gangs could be seen on her stoop, looking for advice, a kind word, or simply a gentle hug. If there was a rally, she was there. A protest to be had, she led the march. A cause for her kids, she yelled the loudest.

    For somebody to just shoot her in the head as she walked alone in the cold dark streets, was unfathomable. It was also the spark that finally set off the fuel had been smoldering in the city of violence for years. Once that spark flared, it started a blaze.

    This wildfire would not be going out soon. For not only was every person in the city determined to be the one who caught the punk bastard who killed their mother, but they were going to make said bastard pay in the worst way possible. There would be no mercy—only street justice.

    * * * *

    Matt was standing outside by his rig as he stared out at the city. While a lot of people may not have felt safe being in his position, he had no trouble with it. First, Matt had been working for several years as a medic in Flint and had earned the respect of the locals. He could have moved on to a nicer city with a much higher pay, but he’d stayed on just because he was one of the few who still believed in the city.

    Second, the people had gotten under his skin. As he looked out, he didn’t see night and stars shining down on a burned out hull of what had once been a great place. He didn’t see the crack or heroin junkies slumped down against the sides of the depilated buildings. He didn’t see all the big factories and once great buildings shuttered up. He saw Flint as it was meant to be, layers of beauty and cultures living together, working together. The city was so alive that on nights like this, Matt could almost swear he could see the streets taking in breaths and the heart beating in the far off distance.

    Which was why it began to annoy the hell out of him when Keyto Rennings began to hurl small stones on the other side of the rig. Ping! It wasn’t overly loud, but still it drew Matt out of his deep thoughts, which were far and few between. Ping! What in the fuck was up with Keyto? A twelve-year old who lived in the area that Matt patrolled, the kid didn’t usually make such bother. A local with a short stature and too much bark for his bite, Keyto was one of Matt’s favorites. Sure, he may bug for a candy bar or a can of soft drink now and again, but that didn’t bother Matt. One less Milky Way meant one less half hour on the treadmill, so he didn’t have one more inch on his ass.

    Matt continued to ignore him. Keyto was, if anything, impatient. Sure enough, a few moments later, Matt could hear floppy smacks making their way over the pavement. Damn it, but when would the youth center even get the funds to get Keyto the right size shoes? If Matt thought that Keyto would accept it, the medic would go out and buy the kid a new pair. Matt knew that he would refuse them. A candy bar was one thing, but Keyto had his pride if nothing else. The only piece of clothing that Keyto had
