The Scarlet Pimpernel by Emma Orczy is a play and adventure novel. The play was first launched on 5th January 1905. The story is set after the beginning of the French Revolution, during the Reign of Terror.

When the play first opened at the New Theatre in London’s West End, it immediately became a favorite of the British audiences.

It ran for more than two thousand performances and became one of the most popular plays ever performed in England.

The author was not deterred and she reinvented the novel as a play. Eventually, the play was highly successful. Finally, it got published as a book in the year 1905.

The novel version of the play was also an immediate success. The author got relieved of her financial troubles, but the critics were not so pleased. They found the novel superficial, classist, and a little more than a disposable lark. They did not present positive views.

The noble class of the society liked the novel and they demanded more books of the similar type, which led the author to write a series of Pimpernel stories over the next forty years.
