    Possession - Sage L. Morgan

    Chapter 1

You don’t mind if I record this, do you?

I shrugged noncommittally. Be my guest.

Evan reached into the depths of his messenger bag and retrieved a digital voice recorder.

Kenna Dawson interview, he recited into the speaker.

I drew up in my seat, waiting for the first question. It was a slow day at Pompeii’s Italian Kitchen, which gave us the perfect amount of privacy. Evan and I had agreed to meet here over lunch so he could conduct the interview I had promised him.

How old are you, Kenna? Evan asked.

Nineteen. I’ll be twenty in about a month.

Evan paused to scribble on a notepad. And where did you go to high school?

I went to Our Lady of Peace Day School. And barely graduated, I mentally noted.

And what do you remember about the beginnings of Governor Dawson’s political career?

Is this for real? I wondered. I gave my answer, which prompted Evan to scribble more into his notepad. So far his questions were very...bland. And bland was not Evan’s style.

    Are you single? Evan continued.

There it is. The real meat of the interview. I drew up even straighter. I’m seeing someone, but it’s not serious, I said cryptically.

Don’t be coy. It’s Jamie Malcolm, isn’t it? The whole country has seen the photos by now.

    Yeah. It’s Jamie Malcolm.

Of course, Evan knew this already. The whole reason I owed him this interview was because he’d helped me investigate Jamie’s past. There wasn’t much about Jamie I knew that Evan didn’t.

How did you two meet? Evan continued.

We met right here, I said with a small smile.

Evan leaned forward slightly and pushed his glasses up his nose as I recalled those first moments out loud.

At night, this place turns into Trash Club. I was meeting my friend here for a night of dancing, and that’s how I crossed paths with Jamie. I didn’t mention that the friend was my other boyfriend, Peter Slate.

Is that why Jamie bought this place from its former owners? Because it’s got some sort of special meaning to him?

Yes. I guess you could say that. I glanced appreciatively around the restaurant for effect.

Before Jamie took over, it had had a cheesy Little Italy theme, which was appropriate if it were, say, 1979. After a visit from several interior decorators, the place had an entirely new feel. Sleek, black furniture and metal trim changed the ambiance to one that was more modern. It was almost reminiscent of the lobby of the Arena One Hotel in Seattle, where Jamie, Peter and I had shared a pretty memorable night. I suspected that was where Jamie got his inspiration.

Evan asked several more generic questions. After a few minutes, he held his notepad out at arm’s length to give it one final once-over.

Well, I guess that’s it, he said.

    "That’s it?" I echoed.

Evan raised his eyebrows. Yeah, unless there’s anything more you’d like to add. He clicked his pen and poised it above a fresh page in his notepad, gazing across the table at me in a sinister way.

I frowned at him. No, I’m just...confused. I just thought you’d ask more questions about my relationship with Jamie.

Evan sighed. "Yeah, that. To be honest, there’s a lot of material out there on Jamie, but not a lot on you. I want to be the first person to write an article on Kenna Dawson."

I snorted. I don’t think I’m all that interesting, but okay. If you say so.

"Oh, Kenna. The way I’m going to write this article will make you seem more interesting than the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Yes, Kenna. I’m that good." He was too busy examining his fingernails to catch my mortified expression.

    Then, are we done?

Evan’s mouth twitched. If I had blinked at the wrong time, I would’ve missed it. But luckily I’d caught it, and the way that tiny bit of movement changed his expression gave me pause.

    Evan? That’s it, right?

Okay, there is one more thing, Evan said. When I groaned, he quickly added, but it’s completely off the record and unrelated to the interview. It’s about your father

    My dad?

Yes. Suddenly, Evan dropped his voice to a whisper, and he cast his eyes suspiciously around the dining room, even though we were alone. I did a little bit of research before coming here. Nothing too in depth. Basic stuff for my questions.

    And?

    "And naturally, I looked up
