There are twelve zoas, or signs of the Zodiac.
Twelve, not eleven. Twelve, not thirteen.
Zoe means life, in Greek. A zoa is a living thing. Thus, an angel is called a living creature
—a beast, if you will.
Kabbalistically, all twelve signs of the Zodiack are represented by one Sephira: Chokmah, or Wisdom.
Why, then, are they zoas—animals?
They are animals because they are blind.
The planets are angels—wandering stars. The Zodiac stay fixed in what they are, like beasts.
This is not to disparage animals. To the contrary, the simplicity and innocence of animals is admirable for many things.
But not all things.
As powers, they are not as intelligent as the planets—that is, Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. They can be used magickally to stunning effect, but their working is rather blind, hard-nosed and specific. Whereas a planet will know how to get a certain thing done irregardless of what situations might confront it, a sign will only go towards its target and, if thwarted, will fail.
Why use them at all, then?
It is a fair question.
Their vice is also their virtue: for as they are direct and confrontational, they are also quicker and potentially more powerful than a planet. They are animals. They are beasts. They are living creatures. Know them as such. A planet will ponder and labor, while a sign will only attack.
Magickally speaking, the twelve Zodiac all correspond to specific points within the four elements. They are the time of the elements—the elements, that is, in sequence.
Thus, a particular sign will constitute the genesis or beginning of an element, bringing it into being. Or, a sign will act as its middle, allowing it to progress, grow, evolve, flourish, prosper, etc. And, lastly,
