Georgia followed the real estate agent up the stairs to the concrete landing. It’s got a wood-fired stove in the living room, enthused the agent, a young blonde named Brooke who looked barely out of high school, as she pulled the keys from her pocket and slid them into the lock. She made Georgia feel much older than her twenty-five years. We have one of them at home. It’s so lovely, sitting in front of a crackling fire on a winter evening.

Georgia put her hands on her hips and frowned at the building’s weatherboard exterior. The paint job was fresh; the boards gleamed white in the autumn sunshine. But a coat of paint wouldn’t stop a frigid winter wind from leeching the heat from the house in the time between breaths. And the big oak tree on the front lawn, as beautifully as it would shade the house in summer, wouldn’t do anything to block the wind blowing in off the lake.

Still, beggars can’t be choosers, Georgia reminded herself, following the agent through the door with a barely suppressed sigh. A shiver ran over her as she passed from the warm sunlight into the cold shadows inside the house. Her shoulders slumped with despair.
