About this ebook

Mellissa is enjoying the start of her vacation. Peace, quiet, wine and books. She has everything she needs to enjoy the tranquil lakeside location, but her serenity is shattered by the arrival of a large feral male who is anything but human. A male who shoves into her cabin, then promptly falls unconscious at her feet.

Dax, a bear shifter, is injured and on the run from the cats who had imprisoned him. He finds refuge with a curvy luscious female who makes his instincts roar, and his fangs ache to claim her as his own. He’s a male, relentless in getting what he wants, and he wants her for his mate. What he hadn’t planned on was a stubborn female who had no intention of giving in just because he commanded.

Mellissa’s insecurities and low self-esteem had no chance against the dominating male who set her body on fire with a simple touch, but when it comes to her heart, she’s not so certain about the risk. Now not only does Dax have to win his mate, and convince her she’s his, but when the clawed danger of the cat shifters come for him, he will do anything to keep her safe.

But can a man known for taking what he wants, find a way to convince his female that he is worth the gamble of her heart.

    Chapter One

Resting her e-reader in her lap, Mellissa gazed out at the landscape before her.

It was impossible not to feel the tension seep from her body and dissipate into the embracing warmth of the summer. Not a ripple marred the tranquil depths of the quiet lake, and the sun shone upon the mirrored surface, making the light dance into the shadows of the woods behind her.

When her friend couldn’t make their vacation, Mellissa had been disappointed. Her decision to go alone had been last-minute; she figured she’d booked the time off work, the cabin was paid for, and hell, once she arrived, there was no law saying she had to stay if she didn’t like it. If the cabin had been isolated, she would have immediately left, but the few other houses dotted around the lake were close enough to reach if she needed help, yet distant enough they didn’t intrude on her solitude.

Now as she reclined on the sun lounger, a glass of pinot grigio by her hand, and a store of books on her fully charged e-reader, she knew she’d made the right decision.

She was determined to make the most of her time alone. Her courage was slowly building, and soon she’d be brave enough to make a change. Try something new. Currently as she stretched out on the lounger, she was wearing a one-piece bathing suit, sky-blue in color and low-cut enough that it enhanced her full breasts without making her look obscene. But inside the cabin, stored away in the bottom drawer of the bedroom dresser was a selection of two-piece bikinis she’d never before dared to wear. Not just new bikinis. Almost a whole new wardrobe. A selection of clothes that fit her, accentuating what she’d always kept hidden beneath baggy skirts and T-shirts.

In day-to-day life, Mellissa didn’t spend much time thinking about her body. She just packed her overabundance of curves into whatever outfit was at hand and went about her day. She didn’t diet; the only exercise she enjoyed was swimming, and her job as a librarian kept her busy.

She wasn’t overweight. Her body just had more well-rounded parts than some women. Her breasts, for example. Her hips, for another. Still, she’d had enough of hiding. This vacation she was going to show off more of her shape. She was going to be more confident. She was going to try, she thought ruefully. Hopefully new clothes, a nice tan, and a week of serenity and relaxation would be her new start. She vowed that tomorrow, she would be wearing a two-piece, no matter what.

A chill swept over her, making her shiver as she lifted her glass for a sip of wine. It wasn’t cold yet but evening was closing in and the temperature was dropping along with the sun. It seemed like a good time to throw on warmer clothes and fix herself some food.

Setting the e-reader down next to her wine, she propped her sunglasses on top of her head and with bare feet, crossed the wooden floor of the porch.

She loved the cabin she was staying in. It was small: one bedroom, a bathroom, a living room, and a kitchen. All the basics, all that she needed. It had a rustic beauty that in its simplicity built a comforting warmth.

The porch was her favorite part. On the right side was a small wooden patio set and to the left, her lounger and small table. A wooden rail lined the edges and connected to steps that led down to the banks of the lake.

Once inside her bedroom, she swapped her bathing suit for a pair of black yoga pants and a red tank top. The pants were snug over her rounded ass while the red tank followed the curved lines of her body. They left a clear impression of her shape to anyone who saw her.

Just as well she was there alone and that would be nobody. She wasn’t ready to be viewed by others in her new figure-enhancing style. She was still the woman used to hiding what she had. She was going to have to do this in baby steps. So, she pulled on a sweatshirt over the top of her fitted tank top. It wasn’t a baggy one; the thrust of her breasts pushed against the thick
