Chapter 1

Walking Towards Disaster

The road was tough and the distance from their position to Galazz was half of the known world. Even if vampires could move fast like the wind, there was also people and all kinds of merchandise that needed to be taken back in perfect condition such as the gold and all kinds of precious metals and jewelry that Valerian had taken as spoils of war after destroying Argus’ empire and taking Don as a prisoner.

As Valerian was leading the convoy, every once in a while he went to the back of the convoy where Hanine was kept prisoner. Otherwise, she would have run, without a doubt, and finding a vampire who liked to be locked was like trying to keep water from evaporating in front of the sun. He wanted to check on her and see if everything was okay with her and also to check to see if there were any unusual changes in her behavior. 

Ohh… look at our savior! she said as he pulled away the cloth blocking the sun from entering into her cabin. This way she could be calmer and sit still in her two feet square space. Do you want to see if I’m still breathing? Don’t worry; I will still be breathing long after you have stopped, my dear!

Valerian could not stand seeing her locked up like that, but that was the only solution. Who knew what might happen if he released her? You know, I hate to see you like that, he whispered to her, but this is the only way we can keep you safe. Who knows what you have in mind? Terrible things could happen. I will set you free as soon as we reach Galazz, but until then you will have to hold on!  He said, trying to put back that piece of cloth that was preventing her from seeing outside.

Nooo, at least let me see the sun and breathe properly if you still have the intention of keeping me as your prisoner for the entire road trip! she begged him, but there was something sneaky about any vampire’s inquiry; they had that cunning in their blood stream.

Will this make you feel better? asked Valerian who was definitely impressed by her pain. After all, she was Hanine, the woman he crossed an empire for. Well, at least she looked the same on the outside, but that was the only resemblance.

You have no idea. Keeping me in the dark is like holding a flower without the sunlight. Do you want me to fade away before we reach our destination? she said, but the sun and the view were the last things on her mind. She wanted to escape, but she had first to find out how to break out of that cage that seemed to be impregnable, then she had to deal with the six guards that were riding close to her carriage, and then the rest of the guards that were numbered in the thousands forwards and backwards. She needed the best plan she could come up with, and the perfect time. Otherwise, she could end up with her head blown away, or even worse.

She needed a distraction and a careful set of moves where, once put in motion, it would work perfectly. So, all she did after Valerian had left, leaving off the cloth that was covering the cage, was to observe the routines of the soldiers, their weak spots and strengths, so that she could know what to expect when she finally managed to break free. She decided to stay calm and stop being so agitated so the soldiers would begin focusing on other things and maybe forget about her. Once that was said and done, she began plotting and scheming in her little corner, thinking of the best way to escape, but all around her were endless plains, and they would be able to see her for miles, even if she managed to escape. That proved to be a dead end for her because she was weakened anyway after she was turned into a vampire, and she could not match herself to an experienced vampire like Valerian.
