Chapter 1

Changing History

As they were running away from danger, Hanine kept looking back as if she was waiting for Valerian to come and take her back…or at least for someone on Valerian's side to come and rescue her. By now, she had no idea what she wanted anymore and she was beginning to regret that she had left the palace. Deep down, there was something itching and telling her something was wrong. She knew that Valerian was a dangerous vampire, and that he was a ruthless bloodthirsty beast. But for some strange reason, she could not stop thinking of him, no matter how much she tried to convince herself she was doing the best thing for herself… that gut feeling was still there, and the more time passed, the stronger it became.

Don’s speed was something she could not match, and yet, she refused to be carried. He realized that something was wrong with her. He could tell from the expression on her face that her soul was troubled by something, but for some time he hesitated to ask her what it was. He had his suspicions, though. He still wanted to believe that she was going to come back to her senses and realize she should spend the rest of her life with him.

Why do you keep looking back? he asked her, visibly annoyed by her attitude. No one is coming for us. We are alone out here.

That's just your impression, she argued, trying to be as convincing as possible, but she could not even convince herself that she was not thinking of him.

I can see it in your eyes, and I will tell you, this bothers me a lot, he said looking into her eyes while she tried to avoid his gaze. It’s more obvious than you can imagine, so please spare me of any lies!

I’m coming with you, and that is all that matters, she said with a strong voice that was hiding fear and uncertainty because her feelings were divided between two vampires, both deadly and unpredictable. Her life was like a feather in the summer winds.

It hurts me to know that you might think of the man who killed me. It breaks my heart just to imagine you might be thinking of another man, said Don looking forward as he was talking, avoiding looking at her because he knew she would not look him in the eyes anyway.

Is your heart still beating or not? asked Hanine with an ironical attitude that triggered Don’s instant reaction.

I don’t know if your heart is beating more than mine, hence, you are not capable of love anymore. And a creepy silence fell on their journey, and all that could be heard was the sound of cracking sprigs
