    CHAPTER 1

    miraclependant

THE TRUCK GREW RELATIVELY quiet for the first time in hours, my brother, Rob, having finally passed out beside me. He leaned against the window, his curly brown hair a mess that needed a good cutting.

Joshua sat driving beside me, the Alpha Grollic silent as if lost to his thoughts. The peace and calm that he exuded over me left me craving more time in his presence, but not more of him. No matter how things turned out, my heart would always belong to Michael.

I closed my eyes and let a soft sigh leave me, my heart trembling in my chest over having not given Michael a proper goodbye. The note I left would do nothing except infuriate him, but I could not continue to be the reason for so much strife in his life.

The fight with the Grollics back in Florida hadn't gone anything like I imagined or planned. With Michael, Grace, Caleb and Seth at our backs, there was no way we should have failed to defeat my father. Yet we did.

    We weren't ready.

    No, I wasn’t ready.

The memory of the fight brushed across my mind and I held it in place, memorizing the scene as if someone had captured it with a paintbrush. The hordes of Grollics Bentos had called to his side were three times that of what Joshua offered me with his own pack.

All of the powers inside of me and I wasn't capable of bringing down the monster in front of me. Pathetic.

The rest of my friends fought against Bentos' hordes, but I focused only on him. Had I done any damage at all? If so, it wasn't apparent in the scene frozen before me. My view was from the ground looking up, the power he pressed against me buckling my knees.

The vision of light that burned between us as my life began to fade was something I never thought I would witness. My mother. Rebekah.

Rob's mother. I glanced toward him and reached out, rubbing his shoulder softly. The action must have caught Joshua's attention.

You okay? He glanced toward me, concern on his handsome face.

I nodded and leaned back, closing my eyes. Where are we?

We're almost in Tennessee. We should be in Colorado by nightfall.

His hand rubbed over the top of mine before squeezing softly.

Why Colorado? I opened my eyes again and turned to watch him. Dark circles had formed under his eyes. He had been driving for the last ten hours. It was probably my turn to take the wheel, but I couldn't seem to force myself to open my mouth to offer or to do anything else.

    It's my home.

    Your home?

Where I was born and raised. I figure it's the best place to start in our search of learning more about you and what you're really capable of doing. He smiled and glanced my way.

His raven colored hair hung over his eyes, but not enough to seem to bother him. I had to glance away for threat of looking like a needy fool in front of him. While my heart belonged to another entirely, I couldn't deny the attraction to the wolf next to me and blame it simply on his beauty. There hadn't been another man I could remember who would be able to hold a candle to Joshua's looks.

Tanned skin, long eyelashes, full lips and the beautiful swell of muscles lining his arms and chest.

I let out a shaky sigh and turned to watch the endless darkness before us. If he was willing to help me find out the truth of my abilities, then I could give him the benefit of the doubt that he wasn't something other than he seemed. My ability to trust anyone was sad at best. Michael didn't help that much.

Michael! He’s beautiful like Joshua! How could I have forgotten that?

How many secrets had we kept from one another since meeting? Too many.

You seem burdened. I can almost feel the weight of it. Joshua squeezed my hand again.

I'm just working through all that went wrong out there. I looked over at him. I failed... again.

Failure can simply be a lesson in how not to do it the next time. He winked at me and nodded to a nearby gas station. I'm going to get out and stretch my legs for a few minutes. You want to wake the snoring bear?

I glanced to Rob, whose snores might have been cute when he was a child, but now... annoying. Nah. Let him sleep. My ears were close to bleeding when he finally stopped talking.

Joshua laughed and pulled the truck into the station. I waited until he was gone before reaching into my backpack and pulling out my personal journal. It was supposed to be used to transcribe my father's journal into English. It was a directive given to me by Michael's mentor and leader of the guardian covenant, Caleb.

It was most likely the only reason I wasn't dead. The fight I overheard between Caleb and Michael the night before was one for the record books. It had become physical about the time I packed up and slipped out. Michael would choose me over all of them, but that was soon to change with Caleb pushing so hard.

I didn't know who I was nor what I was capable of. My powers would rage up and leave me clueless as to how to control them. Almost hurting my brother had forced me to be more aware of the moment.

Flipping through the journal I realized how much my life revolved around Michael. His name was present every other line on the pages before me. I didn’t want to read what I’d written. It hurt too much. Sadness washed over me and I stifled the need to cry. Life wouldn't be the same without him, but what choice did I have?

I jolted at the sound of someone hitting the front of the truck – hard.

Rob snorted in his sleep and shifted, but didn't wake. The large dude staring at me over the hood of the truck had a wicked smile on his face as he nodded toward the store. Several guys jogged behind him and entered the store, each of them carrying a weapon. Big dude stayed in front of the truck.

Oh crap! No. I reached over and locked the door to the cab, unsure of what to do. They were headed to rob the store from what I could tell, but Joshua was still in there. I needed to get out and help him. To do something.

Are you really willing to risk your life for him?

He had for me. I shoved Rob's shoulder, needing someone else to help me think through the situation. The big guy moved to the driver’s door and started tugging on the handle. Was everyone in the country huge and scary? Surely not.

    I jostled Rob harder.

What? He jerked awake and wiped the drool from his face before turning to the driver’s side door. What the hell?

Joshua’s in the store. These guys are gonna rob it. We need to do something, I whispered. Panic was what I expected to feel, but I couldn't seem to muster the appropriate response.

Big bad guy rattled the door harder, trying to get in. The large robber froze, tipping his head slightly before sprinting into the store.

Oh, double hell. Rob reached for his door so I grabbed his arm.

    What’re you doing?

Shifting and saving your mate. He gave me a look and slipped out of the car. He shifted and chased after the big guy almost at the gas station door. The guy screamed and took off, running away from Rob.

I huffed and headed to the convenience store of the gas station, unsure if I would be any help at all. My magic was related to Grollics and these boys were human from what I could gather. The sound of a gunshot caught my attention and I picked up my pace. The sound of the howl among the screaming shot a chill down my spine.

I walked into the store first and stopped cold. The cold chill of death ran over me. Why did I think Joshua might need protecting?

Blood ran from the aisle in front of me, the thick wet sounds of an animal eating reached me and turned my stomach. I couldn't see what I knew was happening a few feet from me. Turning on my heel, I walked back out into the early morning light and took a deep breath. Rob was nowhere in sight, but I had only to guess where he might be. I climbed back into the truck and pulled my legs onto the seat as the reality of this new life set in.

Michael’s kind were descendants of angels or something like that. He hadn’t bothered to explain it all to me. He’d told me a bit about it but not everything. I decided I knew more than he did now. His kind were vicious bad-ass fighting angels, but human in mind, body and spirit. They’d died in their human life and come back stronger with the angel blood inside of them. Grollics were beasts covered in human flesh most days of the week. I sometimes felt like I was both of them and yet I really wasn’t either of them. I was human, the seventh descendant of Bentos, with the ability to control the Grollics. I wasn’t one of them, but I had powers that Michael and his kind would kill for. I’d been writing in the journal and starting to come up with these opinions.

Enough! Back to the present, Rouge!

I locked the doors and pulled out Bentos' journal, flipping to the back as warmth radiated from the small book. Why hadn't my father taken it when we stood face to face? Surely he knew about it being tucked into the back of my pants. He had to be able to sense it like I could.

    Closer.

I glanced up as the word whispered through the air around me. Joshua stood at the driver’s side window with a grin on his face. Unlock the door.

Reaching over, I flipped the lock and tried to keep myself occupied. The last thing I wanted to see was blood on him. Maybe he wasn't as wild as Rob, but I highly doubted it. He climbed in and let out a satisfied sigh as I turned to the page of the journal that spoke of the power of three. Rob had referred to it as the strength of three when we first met. Was it strength or power?

    Did it make a difference?

    It did.

    It had to.

Where's your brother? Joshua started the truck and reached over, brushing his hand along my thigh.

He was outside taking care of one of the guys I assumed was going to rob the shop. I glanced his way, trying to discern why he thought it okay to leave his hand on my thigh. Right. We were mates.

I got the other three. Nice having fangs and claws. Beats a gun any day.

The light in his amber eyes was illuminated as if plugged into a socket. No blood could be found on his face, but the smile that lifted his mouth caused butterflies to dance in my stomach.

I guess so, I muttered and turned back toward the book, reaching down and removing his hand from my leg.

The door opened to my right and Rob jumped in, a wolfish grin on his face too. Damn that was fun!

Right? Joshua chuckled and pulled out of the convenient store.

Almost like having Jamie with us is a bad luck omen. Shit follows my poor sister here wherever she goes.

I growled softly and ran my fingers over the triangle at the top of the page. I hadn't been wrong the night on the beach. The vision of the book, the Sioghra and me were clear. Why hadn't it worked against Bentos then?

Hey, you hear me? Rob elbowed me in the side and received a glare for his actions.

Everyone in this county and the next can hear you, I grumbled and closed the book, my failures weighing far too heavy on me. I go by Rouge, not Jamie, I reminded him.

What's wrong with you? You seem far more dejected than you should. Rob pressed his shoulder to mine and smiled.

Let's see. I lost my boyfriend, didn't defeat our murderous dad, walked up on Joshua slaughtering three grown men, and you chasing down the fourth like a game of cat and mouse. And to top it off, I'm looking for answers to a puzzle that seems to keep shifting. I lifted my eyebrows at him. Would you be happy-go-lucky with all of that crap going on?

    Uh... Rob
